Parisians, however, have forced officials to be more lenient. But letting nature take its course wherever has become so common that the City of Lights is installing exposed, open-air urinals. The urinals stand out because of their bright red paint job, but odor will not be a problem, according to a statement from city officials. A straw layer and other materials absorb the stink and will eventually be used as compost in public parks and gardens. Eco-friendly or not, Parisians are up in arms about the “Uritrottoir,” calling it a blight on their world-famous streets and sights. English-speaking social media seems to be just as grossed out, dousing the urinals with 82 percent negatives. However, other cities, such as Amsterdam, have made similar moves in recent years, while Belgium and municipalities in Australia have done test runs. –Hugo Guzman
