Thanks to The Muse for helping out with the final guest installment of Music Week. She’s pretty rad and you should check out her blog and shit.
It’s music Week and I am honored to be asked by JR to help out. Being that it’s summer time, my favorite time of the year, I want to share with you one of my favorite summer songs!
I’m a child of the 80’s. One of my earliest music memories happens to involve the song “Vacation” by The Go-Gos. I loved them! They were all super rad chicks who I wanted to dress like when I grew up! I wanted to be just like Belinda Carlisle. I even crimped my strawberry blonde hair and wore my shirts off the shoulder just like she did!
Every single summer that song would be on rotation on every pop station. I used to sit by the pool with my Panasonic dual cassette boombox and listen to the song over and over again. I loved summer vacation! School was fun, but chilling by the pool and working on my tan was much better.
“Vacation meant to be spent alone”
It wasn’t until I became a teenager that I realized the song was about summer love… A romance made during a summer vacation. At 14, I spent 2 weeks in Miami where I met a boy named Scott. We stayed at the same hotel. I met him at the pool my first day and we were nearly inseparable those two weeks. My last day I cried. I thought he was my future. Of course, I never saw or heard from him again. I was too naive to understand the summer love.
Now, as an adult, I hear the song and think back to all my old summer vacations when I had a break from school. Life was so carefree! Nowadays, vacations are few and far between. But I was lucky enough to have a great one very recently, one that I will never forget! I spent it was someone really special and enjoyed every single second of my time away from work. Until my next vacation, I will think fondly of my last and every time I hear Belinda singing, I will start thinking about the next one. Because really, isn’t a vacation all anyone really wants in the summertime?
