I’ve been thinking a lot lately about spiritual sex, sexual spirituality, what that actually is and how we express and experience it.
The first aspect of this, of what distinguishes a spiritual sexual experience from ‘just having sex’ is the intention.
Intention is an element of consciousness.
Most of our sexual experiences just happen. There isn’t much thought as to why beyond the pleasure, which is generally short lived. Something drives us to seek out bodies, touch, opening, receiving, giving, taking, orgasm.
Again and again.
When we bring consciousness into our sexuality we move into the next layer.
Intention raises the experience, takes it into a higher space. There becomes a purpose to our union with another.
What becomes important is to acknowledge, consciously acknowledge that purpose.
When we seek communion with God/Goddess/Spirit, whatever we call that, when we pray, when we meditate, there’s a purpose. We’re looking for connection, for answers, for peace of mind, something.
Spiritual sex is the same.
With clarity of purpose comes the next layer, and the layer beyond that…
The creation of an intention forces us to examine the purpose of our sexual desire.
Where does the desire come from, what is it, what do we want from it, why is it such a powerful force within us, and what do we really want from the encounter?
For most people the intention is having an orgasm.
Going deeper into sex as an experience with spiritual possibilities takes us beyond that. And beyond that is a field of limitless possibilities.
Spiritual experience encompasses healing, release, growth, expansion, understanding, questions and answers. It takes us to places of laughter, and tears, fears and hopes, vulnerabilities, fragilities, strength and power. It takes us to spaces of connection with something higher within us, something beyond us. The vehicle for this is our union with another.
This is where sex becomes a sacred expression, this is where, through our bodies, we touch spirit and spirit touches us.
