Ghana’s Premier League season to resume in 2019, according to Fifa and Caf Liaison team member for Ghana Francis Oti-Akenteng.
The top flight has been put on hold by Ghanaian authorities after some referees and top football administrators were caught on camera indulging in malpractices, Ghana latest news reports.
The Ghana Premier League will resume in 2019 following the truncation of the 2017-18 season, a member of the Fifa and Caf Liaison team, Francis Oti-Akenteng, has said.
According to him, the recent turn of events means the new season likely to begin in August next year.
Ghana football is currently at a standstill following damning revelations from an exposé by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The investigative piece captured over 77 football officials and referees allegedly compromising their positions by accepting money from undercover reporters.
The government has since placed an injunction on all football-related activities in the country, with a liaison team being put in place to ensure a smooth transition.
The suspension of the Ghanaian league has, however, been lamented by certain quarters, who want the immediate resumption of the competition.
Oti-Akenteng, though, has revealed that the league will resume in August 2019 following the truncation of the current season.
According to him, it presents the right opportunity to sanitize the system and synchronize the local season with the European calendar.
“We all want the best so let us use this period to improve the standard of our league with this glorious opportunity from God,” the liaison team told Angel FM.
“Many Ghanaians said they want our calendar to move with the European calendar which starts in August/September but let me ask are we ready for it this year? Definitely No!
“So we have one year difference which is next year to organize our league and we must all support this idea.”
He added: “It got to a time that Ghanaians stayed for six months without the premier league so let’s wait for just one year and see what we can do.
“We are still experiencing some difficulties as Liaison team so Ghanaians must exercise some patience.”
Should the decision stand, it is very likely that Medeama, who topped the league after the first round, would represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League.
