To be an entrepreneur is not just about the idea. That’s more about bringing a novel idea to life in a creative way and filling the void. If you still think that being an entrepreneur is cool to say, think again. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean having a bachelor’s degree in business. Also, it doesn’t mean you’re the next Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos. Not everyone will be a millionaire. Instead, being an entrepreneur means starting a risky journey where you have to solve everything to run your idea in the best way possible.
For me, it’s not even having a company, it’s more a way of life; a mindset. It means to be constantly thinking of solutions and finding ways to solve problems. If you are an entrepreneur, you are an explorer who is ready to deal with difficult circumstances. Picture this: you are an explorer who forges the path through uncharted territory with an old map or no map at all and a flashlight. That’s where your talent, creativity, and ability to grow ideas will set your business up for success.
The bad news is we all are humans, and being ‘always-on’ is challenging. Ever feel like there’s not enough time in the day to get everything done? If you’re an entrepreneur, you probably know this feeling well. You’re running on all cylinders trying to keep everything in mind. And one day, you simply can’t think clearly. Feeling overwhelmed is no good way to manage a business. That may cause burnout. No, that’s not a horror story but a true reality for modern entrepreneurs.
The good news is that there are tried and proven ways for keeping a work-life balance. As an entrepreneur, I would recommend you to consider the following strategies:
Don’t Let Your Fears Stop You
You have a good business with regular customers, and everything runs smoothly. Yet, one night, at about eleven, you found out that one of your servers went down. The result is that you no longer have a website. Upset but still optimistic, you log in, enter your cloud-based administration panel, and see that your data is gone. In addition, you realize that one of them also contained a backup. At this very moment, you realize how insecure you are. What would you do? You clearly understand that you and your business are vulnerable from any possible side. Things happen, and we are usually not ready to deal with them. Yet, it’s okay to accept it as it is. The lesson here is to learn from it, get up, and keep doing your job with the same commitment.
It Takes Courage Each Time You Rise and Fall
Have you ever thought about what you would do if you lost everything you have?
“Yes, I have. I will get back on track and move on.”
Without a doubt, there will always be some issues. For example, if one day everything you had accumulated over the years disappeared. After what happened with the downed server, we deleted our website. We had to pass all the checks for a fool:
Delete it?
Yes.
Are you sure you want to delete it?
Yes.
And we completely removed the files and the database from the server.
Set a Right Motivation
My father is an entrepreneur. Before him, there were no entrepreneurs in the family. He told me that there is only one non-renewable resource: time. If you work, you need to work for yourself and not waste this precious time. There was no question whether to go and look somewhere for work or not. You can create everything with your own hands, on your own; you just need to want it.
This message got stuck in my head for a long time, and it was the starting point.
Avoid Burnout
I had a heavy burnout two years ago. Why did this happen? I wanted dynamics; I wanted it fast. And there is an illusion that if I work harder, I will achieve it faster. And later I realized that productivity drops very much and I needed to take some rest to reboot.
The solution? Fall out for almost a month each year, to go to mountains for example.
This is useful. I took part in the regatta; this is how I solved it.
Dream Big
Do you remember that before quarantine we had time for everything?
As the saying goes, “What did you do when there is time for everything?”
I’ve got an international yacht license. I always wanted one, but had reasons to put it off. But not the day I decided to dream big. I signed up for courses at that moment, studied via Zoom, and then practiced for several days, and, you know what? I got it. Finally. I have not yet used it, but I got closure for myself.
What is the goal? If we’re talking about personal motivation, then, for me, it is an around-the-world trip on a yacht. I want this, but also, this may never happen. Who knows, right?
Even if everything will lead to an around-the-world trip, chances are I will get depressed very strongly. Because except this goal, there is no other goal in the big picture. Therefore, I’m going to postpone it as much as possible to live with hope and dream.
Get Ready For a New Day
Entrepreneurship is rarely a straight path. Nothing happens overnight, including success. Getting overwhelmed as an entrepreneur is as simple as that. And there is no easy fix to cure that tension that is an integral part of entrepreneurship. Yet a difference can be in the path we choose. So, when your spirit is dampened, I strongly recommend you push the Pause button. To see how far you can go, you need to clear your mind.
All in all, if you’ve started entrepreneurship for a million-dollar fortune, you did it wrong. In truth, it is something much beyond that. It’s about tweaking and tuning things that don’t go the way you want or planned at first. Remember, if you are an entrepreneur, you have a unique journey, and you have control to shape it. And, of course, it’s not about changing the world. But it’s about the impact it can make on you first.
