Open Thread: When Was The Last Time You Did A Good Deed?

Raining sideways today in So Cal and I saw a man help a woman across a huge puddle today. He didn’t lay down his coat, like in the Old West, but he went out of his way to provide much appreciated assistance.

Got us thinking about helping others.

You know, the way Newark Mayor Cory Booker rescued a woman from a burning house. (Some pols will do anything to curry favor with a key voting bloc, won’t they? We kid, we kid!)

Or actor Jon Lovitz and his online efforts to stop bullying.

So, when was the last time you did a good deed?

Yesterday, as a matter of fact, was the last time I did a good deed. Not as gracious as helping a woman navigate a puddle, mind you, but a good deed nonetheless. But I came from a home where doing good was expected and taught, thus it is intrinsic to who I am as a person. I’m not bragging, mind you, just reflecting on an era where it was considered the norm to think of your fellow man. That is not to day I’m running around dispensing fairy dust or anything because, believe me, when I hop up on my soapbox it can be startling. But you know those moments, when it’s just you being you and suddenly you realize that you’ve made someone else’s day a little bit better? I love moments like that! I wish the whole of society would believe in doing good deeds for others over the self-centeredness we see so much of today.

Last week. I helped several ladies by hoisting their “carry on” bags into the overhead bin.

I’ve found they don’t actually weigh carry-ons, but they do my check-ins. So, when I am moving across country (or between countries) via airplane, I tend to put all of my heaviest stuff in my carry-on. One time that meant a small rolling carry-on pretty much full of textbooks. I could only just lift it up over my head…and it doesn’t help that I’m really too short to put crap into the overhead bin anyway. Somehow I managed.

There’s absolutely no point to this story, except to say that the overhead bins are too high, and that the weight limit and bag limit on long flights is ridiculous.

Alright I don’t want to put down people who help others…but really…helped a woman across a puddle? What the hell? Please tell me she was either elderly or not fully ambulatory? Please.

I try atleast once a week to do something to help someone. Wether it’s hold the door open for them or help them carry the pram up the steps to the elevator in my apartment building. It’s a good feeling to help someone. No matter how small it is.

A few weeks ago, I managed to trip across one bit of good deeds after another in one Saturday. First, a friend who had to escape his crazy landlady needed a place to crash, so he stayed with me for about four days while he found a place. After I agreed to this and on the way to the apartment, I helped a handful of old ladies at the grocery store reach things, carry things, etc. Then on the bus to my apartment I did some translation for a grandmother and her granddaughter with the bus fare — the driver was impatient and the lady only spoke Spanish so with the limited Spanish I can speak I got everything sorted out. I didn’t go out looking for all this, but in a flurry I managed to do all that in about an hour. Sometimes we get lucky.

I just walked all over town (and its a very hilly town) to try and find some meds for my housemate. Sadly Bray seems to lack a 24 hour pharmacy right now :(
