Michael and Sarah had been together since they were 16. Their lives were tied up together in a tale of love, growth, and sharing dreams. Now at 34, with a decade spent married, Michael knew that he loved his wife greatly. She was everything in his eyes — beautiful, loyal, and endlessly fascinating. He was captivated by the way she smiled, the tone of her voice, and even the way her hands felt in his. He couldn’t imagine life without her; their relationship was intimate.
But beneath that love was a heavy burden. Sarah had always been struggling with depression and low self-esteem; she always looked up to Michael for emotional support. Her dark moments, characterized by suicidal thoughts, left Michael fighting to keep her afloat, pouring every ounce of his energy into her well-being. Over time, that responsibility began to wear him down, leaving him emotionally drained.
He had made all the efforts to ensure that Sarah wanted everything she could have — material comforts and meaningful experiences. In the process, their romance had taken a back seat. And though they both shared hobbies and conversations that were deep, Sarah’s temper and unintentional rudeness often pushed Michael to his emotional limits.
Their rift deepened during the pandemic. Michael broke down more times and had to resort to self-help notes to handle his emotional breakage in those arguments. One of those notes was still etched in his mind:
“It does not matter how rude she is because she loves you, and you love her.”
Despite his unconditional love, Michael did what would end up haunting him. In the attempt to tame his uncontrollable desires, he resorted to sneaking to strip clubs by permission from Sarah. That freedom was too exciting for him; he went further than that which he admitted. It got him guilty enough that he confessed, though his uncoordinated delivery made him inflict even deeper harm.
Sarah was heartbroken. Devastated by betrayal, she spiralled into a dark place, and Michael worked tirelessly to make amends. He stayed by her side, sacrificing sleep and his needs, dedicating months of his life to repairing trust he had broken. Months went by and Sarah settled down again, and Michael got a chance to look inward.
What he found frightened him. For the first time, Michael confessed to wanting freedom-not for someone else but himself, solitude, and life to be his, not filled with this emotional burden at all times. He wanted to go out, find himself, and gain individuality, which he lost.
But hurting Sarah again was unbearable. She financially and emotionally depended on him. He loved her dearly, and whatever pleased her mattered more than himself. Michael felt that he was caught between two impossible choices: to stay and lose himself or to leave and risk breaking the heart of the woman he cherished.
As Michael wrestled with his inner turmoil, he often wondered if it was possible to reconcile his love for Sarah with his desire for freedom — or if his desires would forever remain unspoken and silently carried to the grave.
