First dates are like job interviews…
Or more correctly, let me say, whirlwind of excitement and expectations.
You spend hours preparing, even days sometimes, trying to choose the best fitted outfit, trying to pick a spot to impress.
Yet you’re hoping everything goes the way you expect.
You know those moments having ensured everything goes fine and disaster strikes?
Well. There was this girl I had eyes for sometime ago, I managed to get her to agree to a date with me.
Had I known it would be disastrous, I would’ve found an excuse to cancel the appointment.
What a day it was!
We had previously agreed to visit a cinema, but we changed it at the last minute.
I was determined to impress Bisi on our first date. I picked a cozy highly rated restaurant in Nigeria in the city of Ibadan, that had a signature jollof rice and grilled chicken that was making waves around at that time.
This restaurant was the highlight of Ibadan, and it’s often visited by high class and semi high class people.
“I bet you have never tasted real Jollof until you’ve got here,” I said boastfully as we sat on our seats.
Bisi smiled glowingly, already charmed by my decision to bring her to the restaurant. When the waitress came with our plates, the aroma of the smoky Jollof filled the air that Bisi was visibly swept off her feet,
So, I decided it was a moment to shine, then I grabbed a spoon, intending to show off the proper way to mix the rice with the spicy pepper sauce on the side.
But unfortunately, in my enthusiasm and paparazzi, I got a bit too aggressive with my spoon.
As I scooped the rice, the spoon slipped from my hand and, to my dismay and horror, a heap of red Jollof rice flew across the table. It landed squarely on Bisi’s white blouse.
What!!!
There was a stunned silence. the world seemed to have frozen. My mouth was gaply dropped open.
Bisi looked down at her blouse in disbelief. For a second, possibly trying to figure out how best to react. I felt like disappearing under the table. Then, suddenly Bisi burst into laughter, her melodious voice echoing all throughout the restaurant.
“Is this your way of feeding me?” she teased, trying to remove the stains with a napkin.
It was a terrible experience, but I felt relieved by her reaction and i sheepishly joined in the laughter. And said jokingly “I guess this is what happens when the Jollof is too powerful,”
One of the restaurant staffs came in over to help, and by the end of the night, we started sharing another plate of Jollof rice—this time with much more caution and with no desire to impress her.
From that day on, “The Jollof Rice Incident” became an inside joke between us, it marked the start of something special between us.
After that moment, I realized something important: women don’t expect men to be flawless. What really matters to them is how we handle the aftermath of the mistakes we make.
Do we own them? or we are trying to cover up? If you can laugh and joke at yourself mistakes with confidence and own your imperfections, mistakes and flaws you’ll have a far better chance of connecting.
By the end of the night of the date, I had learned a valuable lesson. I wasn’t perfect, and almost ended the date with disaster.
But Bisi didn’t mind. In fact, she admired I took the incident in confidence instead of getting flustered or defensive or covering up.
Women know no one is perfect, in fact they are not expecting you to be perfect. They just want you to be real and authentic.
No one likes to spend time with fake people. Our mistakes, errors, flaws and inadequacies are what us real.
This my funny date story shows that genuine connection can only be built on authenticity.
