It can be hard to know what kind of person they really are. That is why learning how to read people is such a useful skill.
Experts say that most of what we say does not come from our words. In fact 55% comes from body language 38% from tone of voice and only 7% from actual words.
So next time you meet someone keep these clues in mind. They will help you get a better idea of who you are talking to.
Eye Contact
Eyes can tell you a lot. If someone keeps staring at you they may be interested in you. But if they won’t look at you they might be nervous or hiding something. A strong creepy stare can even be a sign of lying.
Eyebrows
Eyebrows move when we feel surprise fear or worry. If someone raises their eyebrows during a normal chat they might be feeling uncomfortable.
Smile
A real smile reaches the eyes and creates small lines around them. A fake smile only uses the mouth. Look at the eyes to tell the difference.
What They Say
If someone speaks kindly about others they are likely a kind person too. But if they are always negative about people it could reflect their own personality — or even mental health.
Tone of Voice
This is called paralanguage. It includes how someone says something not just the words. A flat tone might mean boredom. Sarcasm means the words do not match the feeling.
Side Glance
If someone looks away right after meeting you they may feel uneasy or want to leave.
Nodding
A few nods show agreement. But too much nodding can mean someone is nervous or trying too hard to please.
Chin and Jaw
Rubbing the chin usually means someone is thinking. A tight jaw often shows stress even if they seem calm.
Posture
Standing tall with shoulders back shows confidence. Slouching may look like low self esteem or tiredness.
Rubbing Hands
This often means someone feels hopeful or excited about something.
Handshake
A weak handshake can show a lack of confidence. A very strong one might mean the person is trying to take control. The length of time also matters — too short or too long can feel off.
Leaning In or Away
Leaning in shows interest and respect. Leaning away can mean the person is not interested or feels uncomfortable.
How They Hold a Baby
This one is rare but interesting. Studies say that happy mothers often hold babies in their left arm. Stressed mothers tend to use the right.
Crossed Arms or Legs
These can be signs that a person is closed off. Even if they are smiling their body might show the opposite.
Feet Direction
If someone’s feet are pointed toward you they are likely engaged. If their feet turn toward the door they want to leave.
Shoes
People often judge others by their shoes. Clean shoes may show nervousness. Practical shoes mean friendliness. Boots can signal a tough personality.
Appearance
A neat look may mean someone is organized. A messy style could mean creativity or just laziness.
Copying Movements
When someone copies your body language it is a sign they feel connected to you. This is often done without thinking.
Final Thoughts
Reading people is not always easy and it is never perfect. Everyone is different. But if you learn to spot these signs you can better understand the people around you.
