So we all want to get ahead, make money, find love, start a business, and have a successful career. But is working hard all we need to be doing?
I’ve lived many decades now and can only share my own experience and insights from 60+ years of adult life.
I began my career right after school with a simple job as a stenographer, doing shorthand and typing to earn a living back then.
I found my true love at 17 and married him at 23, riding on a hope and a prayer with no money in our pockets. We migrated to Australia from India together.
He secured a steady government job.
But I had entrepreneurial dreams.
I pursued further qualifications as a beauty therapist and even obtained a teaching diploma in that field. I envisioned starting a beauty college with an attached day spa.
With my mind made up, I knew I wanted to be a business entrepreneur, not working for someone else.
So I dove into research. Business school told me I needed $100,000 to start. I only had $10,000 saved up, but my husband had a steady job. So, I took the plunge. I had made a definite decision.
This is where the Universe steps in. Serendipity happens when you do the work and don’t waver.
Believe in yourself.
I found a premises and bought the essentials to set up my college. When I opened the business, I was down to just $10 in the kitty.
But I had faith. I had belief in myself.
The students came. I expected 6, but I got 24 in my first year. With fees paid in instalments, I managed to buy equipment and products as we progressed through the year.
And voila! The second year and the next 15 years went by like magic!
Of course, I had to work hard and deliver good service, but you get what I mean. Focus on what you want and get started.
Make a start.
Have courage.
Take calculated risks. Yes, I say calculated. Don’t be rash.
But get going.
Life evolved.
During my second year of college, I was honoured with the Telstra Businesswoman of the Year award.
I went on to establish another college in Sydney. My students thrived in the industry, finding employment straight out of college or starting their own salons and shops.
To cut a long story short, serendipity played its part when I made a pivotal decision. I put in the work and charged full steam ahead.
I dedicated myself to helping my students set up their businesses and supported my overseas students in settling in. I started a hostel to house them and ensured their well-being.
Beyond academia, I extended my assistance through Tarot guidance and counselling, and the Lifeline suicide watch.
When my first little grandson expressed, “I love the ocean, but particularly sharks!” my first children’s illustrated book, “Liam Shark Boy,” was born.
This venture blossomed into writing for children around the world.
And here I am in the twilight of my years, reflecting on my journey.
My advice? Focus. Go for it. Live life to the fullest.
The Universe always has your back.
As the saying goes, “God helps those who help themselves.” Whoever your god may be, you will receive help when you take action.
