Most people prepare for what they expect. But I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way, that life rarely gives us the future we pictured…
I always clung to the old saying, “Fortune favours the prepared mind.” It made sense to me. Work hard. Stay ready. Keep your tools sharp. One day, you would be lucky. But then, what is “luck?”
Well, for a while, that belief stayed with me. It made me feel safe, almost in control.
But life has a quiet way of teaching us more profound lessons, doesn’t it?
After a few unexpected, gentle, and painful turns, I realised something no one had ever told me:
Fortune favors the prepared mind, yes…
but only when the mind can see beyond the present moment.
And that part? That’s where most of us struggle. I do too!
The Present Is Loud, but the Future Whispers…
The present has always shouted at me, yes, literally.
Bills. Responsibilities. The fatigue of work. The heaviness of uncertainty. The way life demands attention right now.
It’s easy to shrink your dreams when the present is this loud.
Real preparation, the kind that changes your life, takes discipline. It takes courage. It means looking past what feels urgent and paying attention to the quiet things: instincts, ideas, and possibilities that don’t yet make sense.
Sometimes I think of it like standing in a crowded train station. If all I see is my tired reflection on the floor tiles, I’ll miss the train arriving behind me — the one that could take me somewhere new. Opportunity rarely shouts. It whispers. And if your mind is buried in the noise of “today,” you won’t hear it.
I often remind myself of a simple image: a seed in the ground.
If you planted a seed today and returned tomorrow expecting a leaf, you’d call it a failure. But that’s not how seeds work.
Before it grows upward, it grows downward.
Before it reaches for the light, it prepares in the dark.
It builds roots for seasons that haven’t arrived yet, seasons that might be; harsh, cold, dry, or uncertain.
Sometimes I forget that I‘m also a seed preparing for seasons I can’t see.
And maybe you are too.
Actually, most people prepare to bloom.
Very few prepare to root.
We all experienced a moment at some point in life that felt like luck.
Someone recommended you for a job you didn’t even apply for.
Your business suddenly took off because of systems you set up months ago.
You made a decision that didn’t make sense at the time; to move, study, learn, stay, or leave and only later did you understand why it mattered.
When I look back on those moments in my own life, I smile.
They looked like luck from the outside.
But inside, I know the truth:
It wasn’t luck.
It was quiet preparation meeting a future I didn’t fully understand but somehow believed in.
I’ve seen people with incredible talent stay stuck not because they weren’t capable, but because they were anchored to the present.
They held on too tightly to what they had at the moment.
They only prepared for what they could see.
It’s like packing your suitcase for today’s sunny weather and then being surprised when tomorrow brings a storm. By the time you need the umbrella, it’s too late to get it. Imagine this.
This is how opportunities pass us by day after day. This is not because we lack ability, but because we lack vision.
So how do we then prepare for a future we can’t see?
Here are the shifts that changed my life. I’m still learning them, still practising them, but they have opened doors I didn’t even know were there:
• Stay curious, not comfortable.
Comfort keeps you where you are. Curiosity pulls you toward who you could become.
• Invest in skills before you need them.
The lessons you learn today may save you tomorrow.
• Build systems before success arrives.
If your foundation is weak, success doesn’t feel like a blessing — it feels like pressure.
• Trust quiet progress.
Some things don’t bloom for years. But they’re growing all along.
• Let your future self speak.
Every day, I ask myself:
What would the woman I want to become thank me for doing today?
Her voice guides me more honestly than anything else.
Always remember this;
The future doesn’t reward people who wait passively.
It only rewards people who prepare bravely.
And, preparation isn’t just about being ready. It’s about having vision.
It’s lifting your eyes from what is loud and seeing what is possible.
It’s trusting that the seeds you plant today will someday push through the soil, even if you can’t see any sign of life yet.
Fortune doesn’t just favour the prepared mind, it favours the mind that dares to believe in a future beyond the present.
