Never underestimate the power of a friend.
—
Every morning at 6 a.m., I have a standing appointment to text a friend of mine. (Actually, we switch off roughly every other day, so half the time I’m first, and half the time he is first.) We greet each other and ask what’s in store for the day. We’re both Christians, so we also share any prayer concerns and whatever else is on our minds. The whole conversation lasts about ten or fifteen minutes.
How did this all start? About a month ago, we were chatting and both agreed we wanted to be more consistent in getting up earlier. My friend had the simple yet brilliant suggestion that we text each other every morning. That seemed like a great idea, we have stuck with it. (We only do this on weekdays. I like to sleep in on the weekends when I can!)
The point is that I had a habit I wanted to integrate into my life, and my friend was an essential part of that change. It’s been a great reminder of the power of friendship.

Do you have a habit you want to change or a new routine you want to integrate into your life? If so, this is a great time to reach out to a friend and suggest that you help each other. John Donne famously said, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent.” That’s true in life, business, spirituality, personal growth, and every other meaningful human endeavor.
It’s amazing how this simple text message exchange each morning is changing my life and helping me form better habits.
