“So, if I brought a one-year-old home, would you be ok with that?” That was the question I asked my fiance over the phone in the spring of 2005.
At that time I was only twenty-four, finishing college and broke. So with twenty-four years of experience, which is nothing, the reactions I thought I would get to that question were mainly based off books, movies, and tv shows. I expected, “What? Um no.”, “Ahh, umm… the connection isn’t very… can you hear me now? Click.”, “can I call you back?” and lastly “perhaps we should not rush into this whole marriage thing.”
Instead, he replied, with “I’m down with that.”
Who does this? I didn’t know there were men like this is the world. Men that without question would bring a child that isn’t their own into their family without even needing a day to think about it.
Well, guys, my husband is one of the most optimistic, laidback and openhearted humans I’ve ever met. And he’s all mine!
Flash forward thirteen years, and that child is ours. Talk about foreshadowing with an eight-year heads up. We fostered, adopted, and loved her as hard as we could. The transition from the phone call to fostering had an eight-year break in between, but it was as if we both knew, it was kismet.
You know you’ve found the right person when they are ready to turn their world upside down for you in a heartbeat without hesitation. I was in awe of his open-mindedness, his unfaltering assurance and his reply of “I’m down with that.”. And, I still am in, today as he is an exceptional father to a daughter we have by choice, not by birth. His family was just as kind and welcomed her with open arms.
This is a Hallmark movie in the making if I’ve ever seen one.
My husband’s actions are an excellent example of how both compassion and humanity is alive and well. There are fantastic people in this world, and I hope you have one of these people in your life. You deserve to have love from someone who is this amazing. Mine, however, is taken.
