When you’re constantly in a bad mood, it could be due to a deeper, unknown source. One of my friends who works with troubled children once told me before I could let go of my anger, I need to find the root of it.
For someone who has bottled up a lot, that isn’t easy to do.
There’s a huge difference in disliking your workplace and your job
When I left my position as a customer service support for an e-commerce store, I had the intention to pursue a writing career. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen immediately. The next full-time position I had was in the Food and Beverages industry.
In short, I was the supervisor for a food chain. As much as I enjoyed managing a team and making food for people, my desire to write kept tugging at me. Working long hours for 6 days a week didn’t help.
All I wanted to do was write. After 6 months, I left. The job just wasn’t for me.
The year after that, I was blessed to be a content producer. Yes, that meant I was getting paid to write! It was great until it wasn’t. I loved the job but I hated being in THAT office.
How To Tell The Difference?
If you were financially stable and money was not an issue, would you still be doing your current job?
If your answer is yes, it means you love your job. If you see yourself doing something else, probably its time to rethink your current job.
If someone offered you a job with the same benefits as your current workplace, would you take it?
If you wouldn’t leave your company, it shows that you enjoy working there. If you’d leave in a heartbeat, well… you’ve got your answer.
Find The Job You Feel Empowered To Do
Empowerment is the strength you need to do the work when the days are horrible.
When you love your job, you’ll be empowered to do your best. When your job fulfills your desire, you won’t get distracted by other factors.
For me, that’s writing.
For you, it could be saving someone’s life in the ER or putting a smile on someone’s face with your jokes.
Whatever job you choose, there isn’t a right or wrong choice. Don’t worry about others’ judgment towards it. People didn’t think I could make money by writing online but look where we’re at now.
Find what works for you.
Find The Company You Would Support
Job interviews are a two-way street. The hirer wants to see if you’d be the right fit for the company. But remember that you are also interviewing them to see if its a place you’ll enjoy working at.
Jobs are everywhere. If one company’s culture is terrible, move on to another company that will treat you right.
Look for signs before you accept their offer
- Is there a high staff turnover rate? If yes, what’s the reason? Were they fired or they chose to leave? A high turnover rate can be a sign of poor welfare.
- If possible, see how the employees interact with one another along the corridor. Do they at least smile at each other? Your future colleagues are people you’re gonna spend 8 hours a day with.
- While waiting, strike a conversation with an employee. What do they say about working there? If they’re afraid to speak about the company, something is definitely off.
- Is there a diverse community? I’ve been in a company where I was the minority. We had very few females staff and even fewer people of color. This wouldn’t be such an issue if racist remarks weren’t thrown at me every day.
If the company you’re working in or interviewing at gives you terrible vibe and your instincts are telling to you run, get the hell out of that place.
Find a company that respects you. An organisation you’d draw your sword for if you’re ever at war.
