Bright, which debuted on the streaming service on Dec. 22, is Netflix’s biggest movie investment to date, with an estimated $90 million budget. It stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, who play a couple of police officers patrolling modern-day Los Angeles. The twist is that Edgerton’s character, Nick Jacoby, is an orc, as this Los Angeles is in an alternate universe where humans attempt to coexist with other creatures (including elves and fairies). The orcs are held back by systemic and overt racism, which is either accidentally or intentionally an awkward/uncomfortable racial allusion to people of color in the U.S. IndieWire says Bright is the “worst movie of 2017,” while Variety says it’s “the best Netflix original movie to date.” Rotten Tomatoes critics score the film at 28 percent fresh, but it has an 88 percent audience rating and over the last three days, Social is giving @BrightNetflix a 76 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
