The trailer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie has been released and it doesn’t look half bad.

I grew up loving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and how could I not? They had everything that a 90’s kid thought was cool; they were ninjas, heroes, and said “Cowabunga”, it was heaven for a young boy. I watched the cartoon, had the toys, and basically thought I was a heroin a half shell; life was great.
Then they made a few movies which were just a little weird, actors in rubber turtle suits weird. Sure the movies held all the charm of the characters but it got the same treatment that all super hero movies of the 80’s/90’s did; cheesy effects, hamfisted scripts, and awkward actors. They left something to be desired.
The same thing can be said for the 2007 reboot, which used CGI instead of rubber. It wasn’t much better in the effects department and was met with average reviews. It just wasn’t what we wanted out of a TMNT movie.
Well hopefully all that is about to change with the newest reboot in the TMNT film series. The latest will be live action and include updated special effects. Although I don’t recall the original turtles having anything resembling lips, the rest of the effects we are shown looking pretty slick.

Yes Michael Bay is the film’s producer, think what you will but his handling of the Transformers movies is pretty spot on with what I was expecting out of that cartoon/toy line. While this will bring the flare that has become synonymous with his name, meaning explosions and outlandish sets, Bay hands the director’s reigns over to Josh Leiberman. Maybe a different director will mean a slightly less “Bayish” movie. Either way we all know exactly what we are getting when Bay’s name is attached to it, so don’t be so shocked when it turns out similar to his other films.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to be released on August 8, 2014 and I plan on seeing it. Will it be a genre defining, awe inspiring film? Probably not, but it will certainly be entertaining and fun.
