The Huntsman Winter’s War tells a tale that takes place long before the last movie but sadly is not that great
I am a fan of Chris Hemsworth, there hasn’t been anything I have seen him in that I don’t like. I also really love fantasy films, especially when it comes to fairy tales. I liked the new version of Cinderella they did last year, you can find my review of it here. So when news came my way of The Huntsman Winter’s War I decided to give it a shot. I wish I hadn’t and here are some reasons why. You can learn more about this movie right here.
Here is the plot for The Huntsman Winter’s War:
“Betrayed by her evil sister Ravenna (Charlize Theron), heartbroken Freya (Emily Blunt) retreats to a northern kingdom to raise an army of huntsmen as her protectors. Gifted with the ability to freeze her enemies in ice, Freya teaches her young soldiers to never fall in love. When Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and fellow warrior Sara (Jessica Chstain) defy this rule, the angry queen does whatever she can to stop them. As war between the siblings escalates, Eric and Sara unite with Freya to end Ravenna’s wicked reign.”
There are a few good things about The Huntsman Winter’s War. Chris Hemsworth has some good action sequences and brings a good balance of humor and seriousness to his role as the Huntsman that is never out of place and helps the movie quite nicely. His character also has a good repertoire with Sara that is sometimes harsh and cruel but they have a history and a common goal that they both will stop at nothing to accomplish which is a glue that made me enjoy each scene they were in together. I also really liked the way they went with some of the creatures, they seemed odd at first but they were amazing, sometimes frightening and each one was a force to be reckoned with.
Yet here are some of the reasons why I didn’t like The Huntsman Winter’s War that much. The story line is way too predictable for starters. When a tragedy happens and it appears one of the characters has died wait just a moment, you will find out somehow they survived the ordeal practically unharmed. Yet one of the worst things about this movie is Charlize Theron, or to be more accurate her role as the Evil Queen. Not only was it no surprise to see here again (she is in every trailer they have released for this movie) but what is worse is that she seemed entirely unnecessary. All of her scenes try to be amazing but they come off as over the top, ridiculous and just full of CGI that looks pretty bad honestly. There were also some dwarves that helped the Huntsman out but they were also not needed much and were only there to provide comic relief that fell flat nine times out of ten.
I find The Huntsman Winter’s War deserves 4/10. There are a few good parts in this prequel but not enough to make a movie that is worth seeing. Fans of Snow White and The Huntsman may enjoy this one, but if you didn’t like it that much you would do best to miss it. The ending is the worst part with a ton of ridiculous action, nothing happens you couldn’t see coming a mile away and the happily ever after that people expect from these kinds of films although this one is a tad cheesy if you ask me. It is a shame with such a great cast coming together the end result is kind of a let down.
If you liked Snow White and The Huntsman then you may want to see this movie. If you are a fan of fantasy films this is one you may find to be fun. Yet if you want a movie with that will blow you away this is not the picture to pick. Better to see something else, a film the whole family will enjoy. The Huntsman Winter’s War comes out this Friday.
