♪ The world with one person ♪
Tell me where I can put you down.
I’ve ridden the sky from midnight to dawn
and carried you all the way till morning.
♪ (Adriana Kohutkova, “Lakmé: Flower Duet”) ♪
And I am tired, and I am tired,
and my hands are still stained
with the soft of you.
I thought it was work
enough to be black,
to be a pool of night sky
so wide and so hungry, to have starlight crackle
under my flesh such that I am burning even in the most quiet recesses
of dusk.
I thought it was work
enough to be queer, a question mark instead of a person,
a stumbling block, an unchecked box,
a challenge to God, a hazard to nature itself.
Milan Kundera writes: “There are things
that can be accomplished only by violence.
Physical love is unthinkable without violence.”
And I used to think that this was
some patriarchal rape culture apologist bullshit,
and I still do,
but then I think of you and me, and how much blood lies between us.
And I think of the ship that brought you here,
and the bodies buried deep in the Earth like a dagger through the heart,
black,
and the bodies dragged behind speeding cars,
black,
and the bodies bludgeoned dead in far away fields,
black,
and the bodies thrown from buildings like rotting produce,
black,
and the bodies burnt alive, black, and the bodies black,
and the bodies black, and the bodies black.
I think of us, our bodies.
I think of how we split one another like atoms
I think of the wreckage.
I think of my body
laid to waste,
my hair falling at my feet like autumn, but there is nothing beautiful.
I would like to be in love and not have to lose.
I would like to be alive
and not have to lose.
I would like to be something other than the detritus of a broken people.
I would like to be more than an intricate collection of scar tissue.
I would like to name the stars after
something other than all the things that have tried to kill me.
