DJL Dato Jonathan Lim is one of the most celebrated entrepreneurs in Malaysia. He is not just a successful online entrepreneur but also a popular motivational speaker and business coach. But very few know that DJL has excellent taste in fashion.
According to DJL, “Much of my confidence as a speaker and coach comes from what I’m wearing. This may sound weird, but I feel confident when I’m wearing the clothes I like. It may be a three-piece suit or just a hoodie with joggers. When I’m in front of hundreds of people, I must feel confident. I have to make sure that what I say influences my audience. And if that confidence comes from what I’m wearing, I don’t see anything wrong in following that strategy.”
DJL’s secret to dressing stylishly
Many would question that if the dressing is so important for DJL, he must be selecting his clothes before an event. Well, he doesn’t. DJL loves wearing stylish clothes, but he doesn’t consider himself as a person with a keen sense of fashion. Instead, he seeks help from a stylist.
DJL recently revealed in an interview, “Slacks and t-shirts are my favorite. But they wouldn’t make me look smart, would they? Even though I love wearing various types of clothes, I don’t know which one would suit which event. And so, I have a stylist who helps me out every time. He tells me that a black suit looks smart, stylish, and professional. I follow that style in most of the events I attend.”
DJL’s stylist believes that black is the best color for his client. “Many people say that a black shirt and black suit combination looks unhappy at times. It’s as if he’s attending a funeral. But that’s only a handful of people talking. Sure, wearing a black suit in a warm country may get uncomfortable, but the black shirt still looks stylish, irrespective of the climate. White may put off the audience because of its brightness. On the other hand, black looks more welcoming.”
Picking t-shirts from his favorite brands
Apart from a black shirt and black suit, DJL also likes wearing collared t-shirts. Sometimes he would meet and greet his students in collared t-shirts and jeans. He believes that collared t-shirts provide the same effect as a shirt but feel more comfortable. Moreover, he wants his coaching sessions to be slightly informal. He is one of those mentors who love interacting with his students. DJL feels that an informal conversation allows students to open up about the problems they are facing.
The multi-millionaire loves wearing branded t-shirts. He sticks to two of his favorite brands, Versace and Super Dry when it comes to buying stylish shirts. DJL also encourages his followers to try out alternative fibers, such as bamboo and hemp, as they are quite comfortable and available at a low price.
It’s unimaginable that a busy person like DJL finds time to influence his audience about the fashion industry. This shows his enthusiasm in exploring a range of industries and finding success in each of them.
