Have you ever experienced a day, or even part of a day when, like Jim Carrey’s character in the movie Bruce Almighty, it seemed like everything in your life was working in your favor? Perhaps it happened on the sports field, or during sales meetings, or while you were on vacation, but whatever you did came off as or better than you anticipated. It was like there was an unseen hand influencing events in your favor.
This has been commonly called a state of flow, being “in the flow”, or simply synchronicity. I experienced flow from time to time as a competitive sportsman, but would never know when or if I would next experience it. It was only when I was studying how human energy works that I came to understand how and why synchronicity happens and identified five factors that all must be present for flow to occur.
1. Presence
The first of these factors is presence. In this context presence means that the person’s attention must be wholly focused upon what he is experiencing in that moment, not worrying about what he didn’t like about something that had just happened, and not in fear of what might happen next…just focused on what is happening now.
2. Positive Anticipation
The second factor required to experience flow is being in a state of mind that expects positive outcomes. This will be easier for those who have been raised by positive parents and guardians but, just as negativity has been learned by many, being conscious of when and how that happened can help to “unlearn” such habits, and gradually shift your default state to that of positive anticipation.
3. Self-Acceptance
The third factor that needs to be present to experience flow is unconditionally accepting who you are and how you are being. Once again, those who have been often criticized, blamed and/or judged when young will need to face and de-program the resulting feelings of not being acceptable to others. However, there are a variety of ways this can be done and, by releasing the accompanying guilt, shame, and self-punishment, such people will open themselves to experience a greater level of support from others and from life generally.
4. Purpose
Those with a sense of destiny or purpose activate a connection with the flow of life that acknowledges that we are all here to be of service. By doing so, we connect with the loving essence of the whole, sharing in the inherent nature of love that we each have at our essence and which can be tapped by any of us at any time just be remembering this loving nature, and that we share this nature with everything and everyone.
5. Love in Action
Whatever you are focused on needs to be something you love in order for you to experience synchronicity. This is because a state of flow expresses alignment with what is most loving for you in any moment and we can know what that is because we feel it as a love of that activity or relationship. For this reason, in order to experience a life and career that flows well, we need to be willing to choose from an awareness of what we most love rather than what we feel we must, should or have to do.
At Business Energy Coaching, our work is always to identify what is most loving for a business and its leader, then align the leader’s mental and physical energy with that business vision. This results in a business designed upon and aligned with, love for itself and all its stakeholders, which drastically reduces stress, healthcare costs, absenteeism and staff turnover, while increasing creativity, productivity, collaboration, sales, and profit.
