Soft skills—just the phrase itself seems contrary to the conventional rough and tough image of masculinity. But men need soft skills just as much as women do to be successful at work and in their private lives. Soft skills are abilities, personality traits, and habits that affect how you interact with others and manage your tasks. For many years, soft skills were dismissed as non-essential. But more men today are embracing the benefits of honing these skills. Here are some soft skills that you should develop to improve your daily life and career.
Communication
Perhaps the most well-known soft skill is communication. Good communication skills help you build rapport with your peers and customers and establish trust with them. This in turn helps to avoid conflicts, ease negotiations, and solve problems effectively.
Part of communication is active listening. This may be difficult for men who are used to directing conversations and giving their opinions. Developing active listening skills such as asking open questions and not offering judgment can help make conversations more pleasant and productive.
Hire a seasoned sales coach to help you improve your communication skills. In a sales setting, active listening and good communication can help to build relationships. Instead of using the outdated hard sell method, you can provide value to the customer by identifying their pain points and offering tailored guidance.
Vulnerability
The ability to be vulnerable means not being afraid to show emotions or ask for assistance. This can be hard for men who pride themselves on independence and are often conditioned to downplay their own needs and feelings.
Opening up about these things can build trust and improve your relationships with the people that you live and work with. It can also help reduce stress and anxiety as you will not be suppressing your emotions and having to deal with your problems on your own.
Improve your emotional resilience by learning how to cope with negative emotions in a healthy way. Practice talking about your vulnerabilities and needs in a safe environment. As you become more comfortable being vulnerable, you will be less defensive and more confident in your personal and professional relationships.
Thoughtfulness
There are many ways that thoughtfulness can manifest in the workplace that go beyond holding the door for others. You can start by being more aware of other people’s feelings. For instance, pronouns may seem insignificant to you, but they may make a world of difference for other people.
Another way to be thoughtful is to respect others’ time by not taking up too much of it. Show up to meetings on time, turn off your phone during discussions, and only call on the phone when necessary.
If someone has helped you, show your appreciation by leaving them a thank you note or a small gift. Your attention to detail will be appreciated by your peers and superiors and will win their respect.
Adaptability
Flexibility is key when it comes to success in the modern workplace. You have worked hard to reach your current position and it can be bracing when you are told that you need to learn more or update your skills. Try to remain calm and think objectively about your capabilities.
Culture, technology, and business strategies evolve very quickly, and it is important to keep learning in order to adapt to the changing demands of the market. Instead of resisting change, embrace the opportunity to develop a more versatile skillset.
Certain self-help courses can teach you to face change with optimism and enthusiasm while others can train you to think on your feet. Next time you meet a new or challenging situation at work, this soft skill will allow you to approach it with confidence and ease.
Self-awareness
Self-awareness is an essential skill to have if you want to be successful in your career. Being self-aware means that you understand your personality, behavior, strengths, and weaknesses.
Being wrong can be a scary thing for a lot of men but it can also be a powerful tool for growth. When you have self-awareness, you can own your mistakes, take criticism constructively, and learn from the experience. Being strong enough to admit your shortcomings and smart enough to learn from them are key leadership traits that companies look for.
As you get to know yourself better, you can identify thought patterns or habits that may be impeding your success. It is never too late to develop this skill and you would be surprised by how much it can help you achieve your career goals. Improve your self-awareness by practicing meditation or journaling.
Curiosity
If you want to get ahead in your career, you must keep your mind open to new ideas and experiences. There are many benefits to being curious such as increased creativity and improved problem-solving skills.
Being curious also means taking time to consider various perspectives. Keep an open mind instead of getting caught up in unconscious bias. Instead of seeking information from the same sources all the time, talk to people at all levels of your organization and from all walks of life.
It can take a while before you feel comfortable asking questions, but you will learn so much more than you did before. After working hours, feed your curiosity by reading articles from authors you admire, listening to podcasts, or watching TED talks.
