“We badly need a better way to work and a richer way to live.”
This TED Women talk by Margaret Heffernan titled, “Why it’s time to forget the pecking order at work,” speaks directly to an issue I hold dearly: Gender Inclusive Leadership. Hope you enjoy!
“For the past 50 years we’ve run most organizations and some societies along the super chicken model. We’ve thought that success is achieved by picking the superstars – the brightest men or occasionally women in the room – and giving them all the resources and power… and the result has been aggression, dysfunction, and waste.”
“What matters is the mortar, not just the bricks.”
“Social capital is what makes companies robust. It compounds with time.”
From TED.com: Organizations are often run according to “the superchicken model,” where the value is placed on star employees who outperform others. And yet, this isn’t what drives the most high-achieving teams. Business leader Margaret Heffernan observes that it is social cohesion — built every coffee break, every time one team member asks another for help — that leads over time to great results. It’s a radical rethink of what drives us to do our best work, and what it means to be a leader. Because as Heffernan points out: “Companies don’t have ideas. Only people do.”

This study is absolutely amazing. In the scheme of things it makes perfect sense. As a manager you sometimes tend to over utilize the so called super-stars and give the others basic responsibility. It absolutely does lead to stress , anxiety and much more. If everyone was utilized and developed equally then the responsibilities, the team effort all of those things would be balanced. Very well explained. It definitely made me think about the way I manage my team. Thank you!
