Tom Matlack currently teaches a unique and inspiring summer course for freshman and sophomore athletes at Wesleyan University—focusing on the fundamentals of business, finance, and navigating life beyond sports. Role models and real world insights are an important part of learning, and with that in mind, Tom launched a video interview series where he sits down with accomplished business leaders to discuss their careers, challenges, and specific insights that are unique to them. These candid conversations are being shared publicly, both here on The Good Men Project and other platforms, in hopes of reaching a wider audience of students, athletes, and aspiring entrepreneurs.

The first video in the series features Tom Macejko, a long-time senior partner at the prominent private equity firm Madison Dearborn. Macejko shares the story of his impressive career in finance whose professional life took a hard right hand turn at age 45. It’s a reminder that career paths are rarely linear, and that reinvention is always possible, no matter how established you may be in your current role.
The interview gives insights into leadership, risk-taking, and finding personal meaning in your work. It’s designed to be helpful for college students considering a future in business, particularly those involved in athletics who are struggling to balance the demands of sport and academics while planning for life after graduation. But it’s also fun and personal and covers a wide range of topics–including Pulp Fiction.
Please follow along with the series by subscribing to the YouTube channel—and share the episodes with friends, family, and any college students in your life who might benefit from hearing these conversations. It’s a great opportunity for young people to learn from those who have navigated the complexities of the business world and who are generously sharing their wisdom.
