From extreme sports to breathtaking views…stay tuned to number 1 to find out 10 of the most
00:05
amazing things you can only experience in the winter!
00:20
Number 10: The Classics.
00:23
While it may be true that this list is meant to emphasize the “out of this world” things
00:26
you can do in the winter around the world, there are some basic things that you can do
00:30
in any place that has snow, the classics ladies and gentlemen.
00:35
Like what?
00:36
How about building a snowman?
00:38
Or building a GIANT snowman?
00:40
Yeah!
00:41
It’s fun stuff, and you can dress them up, make cool extensions of them, and more.
00:46
Or how about a snowball fight?
00:47
That’s a worldwide tradition right there!
00:50
Who doesn’t love chucking snowballs at friends and family members in order to make them scream
00:55
in pain…I mean…to have them enjoy the thrill of the fight.
01:00
Yeah…that’s it.
01:01
And for the younger kids, there’s always making snow angels, or going sledding on nearby hills.
01:06
Or attaching your dog to a sled and having them take you around town like a real sled
01:10
dog.
01:11
It’s good stuff, and all you need is a little snow to do these thing, location doesn’t matter.
01:17
That is why the classics never go out of style.
01:21
Number 9: Ice Sailing.
01:22
Ok, we’ve all heard of ice skating, right?
01:25
Well in the state of Michigan, in fact, right on Lake Michigan, they decided to take this
01:30
classic activity and go crank it up to 11.
01:33
Because they made the sport of Ice Sailing popular.
01:36
How does this work, well, not exactly like you think.
01:40
You can’t just take a regular boat and go sailing out on the ice.
01:44
Rather, you have to make a custom “ice rocket” that’ll allow you to cut and glide across
01:49
the ice at impressive speeds.
01:51
In fact, the top speed of these craft are around 60 miles per hour, which is pretty
01:56
good for a non-powered boat.
01:58
The fun doesn’t end there though, Michigan actually has their own club for this sport,
02:02
and it has over 2,000 people in it!
02:05
Yeah, there are a bunch of people who love going ice sailing, and the appeal is definitely
02:10
there.
02:11
Granted, you need to know that the place you’re ice sailing on is solid, which is why this
02:15
takes place on Lake Michigan, for when that thing freezes, you know it’s solid.
02:21
Number 8: Heli-Skiing.

02:40
Skiing and snowboarding are definitely some “classics” of winter season, but, you need
02:43
a place with serious elevation to actually enjoy the experience.
02:47
But, if you’re looking for an extreme adrenaline inducing experience that’ll take your skiing
02:53
or snowboarding to the next level, then head to Idaho where they have Heli-Skiing.
02:59
What is that?
03:00
Well, it’s not you skiing or snowboarding with a helicopter, I can tell you that.
03:05
Rather, you go up in a helicopter and jump out of it to begin your descent down to the
03:09
base of the mountain.
03:10
“Sun Valley Heli Ski pioneered American helicopter skiing, setting the standard for nearly five
03:16
decades,” Sun Valley Heli Ski explained on its site.
03:19
“A vast territory covering three mountain ranges provides unparalleled access to Idaho’s
03:24
legendary powder and terrain for all abilities.”
03:28
While that makes it sound epic for sure, you have to wonder how safe it all is.
03:33
After all, you’re jumping out of a helicopter just to make an epic entrance onto a mountain
03:37
slope.
03:38
But, the catch is that the areas they take you to are places rarely shredded.
03:42
Thus, it’ll be almost like a truly unique experience.
03:46
But, yes, avalanches can certainly be a concern.
03:48
As can the cost.
03:51
That being said, these rides are $1500 per day.
03:56
Number 7: Waterfall Climbing.
03:59
The reason that there are certain things you can only do in winter is simple, because at
04:03
times, you need the water to freeze in order have the tools necessary for the experience.
04:07
For example, you only ice skate if a lake, pond, or pool is frozen.
04:12
Likewise, you can’t climb a waterfall unless it’s frozen.
04:15
“Wait, you can climb a waterfall?” you ask?
04:18
Yes, yes you can, but you need to be trained in order to do it successfully.
04:23
Thus, there are multiple institutes around the United States that train you in this skill.
04:27
There is one in California (which seems an odd place), and another in Colorado.
04:32
You might think that this kind of training isn’t necessary, but it is.
04:37
Waterfall Ice, as it’s called, is a bit different from regular ice, and if you aren’t ready
04:41
for it, you’ll get hurt, and no one wants that.
04:44
But, once you’re ready, you’ll have a climbing story that few will get to say that they’ve
04:48
done.
04:49
Number 6: Ice Fishing In Alaska.
04:52
Ok, technically, this is one that you can do outside of Alaska, and there are many northern
04:57
states and countries that offer this when the temperature and setting is right.
05:01
But if you go to Alaska, they’ll take care of you in a fun way, for they’ll take you
05:05
on a full-on tour of the Alaskan River, and not just let you ice fish, but provide you
05:10
with a warm cabin to call your own, as well as pre-prepared food so that you don’t have
05:14
to worry about catching anything on your tours should you not be lucky.
05:19
Not to mention, winter in Alaska is very beautiful, and you’ll see some incredible, once-in-a-lifetime
05:25
sights.
05:27
Number 5: Snow Golfing.
05:29
I kid you not, this is real, and it happens in Sweden.
05:33
Usually, the winter season is the “endgame” for golfing in most places on Earth.
05:38
But not in Sweden!
05:39
They not only have Snow Golfing, they praise it as a great invention of theirs:
05:44
“Summer golf has been here since the 1930s, but we wanted to do something for the wintertime,”
05:50
Merja Bergwall, marketing and sales manager for Lapland Resorts, told CNN.
05:54
“We have nine holes and we use snowplows that we usually use on the slopes (to smooth the
05:59
course).”
06:00
For $50 you can run the course, you can even do nighttime golfing, and should you do that,
06:06
they’ll give you glow in the dark golf balls to hit!
06:09
Number 4: Antarctica Marathon.
06:12
Antarctica is one continent that is both revered and feared.
06:16
It holds many wonders and secrets that we don’t know about, but we do know that it’s
06:21
cold, REALLY cold, and because of that, people try and go to the “uncharted continent” in
06:27
order to prove their mettle and show that they can do things others can’t.
06:31
So should we really be surprised that there is a marathon on Antarctica?
06:35
I don’t think so.
06:37
“Adventure marathoners and ultra athletes are always looking for the next big challenge,”
06:41
the race’s website reads.
06:43
“Mainland Antarctica represents the last frontier, the final great wilderness to be conquered.
06:48
And now adventure athletes like you can do it.”
06:52
Well that’s one way to say it!
06:54
The race itself takes place in November and December, but it’s costly, you’ll need to
06:59
have $17,500 to get in.
07:03
Number 3: Mt. Everest and The Balloon.
07:07
Man loves challenges, and one of the biggest challenges ever conceived by man is to climb
07:12
to the summit of Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world (kind of, long story).
07:19
Many have tried to do this, and many have failed.
07:22
Like seriously, a vast majority fail, it’s not even funny at times how much they fail.
07:27
But some do succeed, and it takes grit, determination and the will to push forward.
07:32
But…if you don’t have that, or you don’t want to risk passing away, yet you still want
07:37
to get to the top of Everest, there is a roundabout way you can do so, but only in the winter
07:42
time.
07:43
For during that season, you can actually go up in a hot air balloon, and reach the peak
07:47
of Everest, and then go right over it as you float higher and farther into the sky.
07:53
There are a few catches here that you need to know about.
07:56
First, this is not a “one-day experience”, you’ll have to be in Nepal for weeks preparing
08:01
yourself for the journey.
08:02
After all, you need to be ready for 30,000 feet in terms of height.
08:07
The balloon trip will take a day though.
08:09
The other catch?
08:10
It’ll cost you over $4 million dollars to do the trip.
08:14
Best make sure your wallet can handle this before committing.
08:18
Number 2: Husky Safari.
08:21
Ironically enough, Christmas isn’t exactly famous for its animals.
08:24
Granted, we partner up certain animals for the experience, such as what happens with
08:29
the polar bears in the Coke commercials.
08:31
But, there is one animal that is most definitely associated with Christmas: reindeer.
08:37
Despite their legendary ties to Santa Claus, some people actually believe that they don’t
08:42
exist.
08:43
But in fact, they do, they just live in certain places on Earth, and thus most people don’t
08:47
get to see them.
08:48
But, if you go to Finland, not only can you see them and interact with them, you’ll be
08:53
guided to them by your very own Sled Dog team!
08:57
One pulled by the legendary snow dog breed, the Siberian Husky:
09:00
A husky safari is a truly thrilling experience, especially when you have the chance to be
09:05
a musher in control of your own team of dogs.
09:09
Experience the excitement of the dogs as they eagerly wait to pull you at a speedy pace
09:13
through the breathtaking Lappish scenery.
09:15
Now, if that doesn’t sound magical, I don’t know what does, and more than that, meeting
09:20
a reindeer has to be a truly unique and fun experience.
09:23
And only $180 for a single day excursion?
09:27
If you can make the trip, do it.
09:30
Number 1.
09:31
Ice Hotel.
09:32
No, not a “nice hotel”, an “Ice Hotel”.
09:36
You know, where everything on property is made of ice?
09:40
Yeah, it’s a real thing, and you can find it in the winter time in Sweden.
09:44
And guess what it is called?
09:46
The Ice Hotel Sweden.
09:49
So much creativity, am I right?
09:51
Now, if you’re from warmer climates and you don’t like the cold, you might think, “Why
09:55
would anyone want to go there?”
09:57
But guess what?
09:59
This hotel is actually one of the most sought after getaways for the winter time.
10:04
People REALLY like it there apparently.
10:06
The ice itself comes from the river Torne, and they use the ice to make everything that
10:10
goes into the hotel, including elegant ice sculptures.
10:14
That’s actually part of the entertainment, being able to see an exhibition of ice sculptures
10:18
and the like.
10:19
But it’s not just a hotel that you stay at, it’s an experience:
10:23
“A place to discover silence, northern lights, glistening snow clad forests, reindeer, cloudberries,
10:30
kettle coffee and much more,” says the hotels website.
10:34
Granted, this is not a getaway everyone will enjoy, but if you’re up for some ice…I mean
10:39
nice…fun that you can’t get anywhere else, then to Sweden you must go.
10:45
What is your favorite thing to do in the wintertime?
