Did you know the civil asset forfeiture law allows law enforcement to seize property without convicting anyone of a crime?
Since the 1700s, it was used to seize ships transporting illegal goods. In 1978, Congress extended it to hold onto drug money. Six years later, it was extended again to include cars, homes, and any other private property.
Mindy Rhea is an example. The cops took her car. As a result, Mindy lost her job as a personal assistant. Without her job, she had to move out of her apartment and sleep on couches of her friends’ house. A year later, Mindy is still without her car.
