On Twitter, two boisterous personalities—President Trump and Kanye West—have commandeered attention with their constant off-the-cuff comments, leaving everyday users gasping for relief. For Trump, blasting away online is nothing new: He’s been spewing a mix of insults, threats, and boasts for years (along with actual policy positions). This week, he took to complaining about the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and comedian Michelle Wolf, writing that the event “was a failure last year, but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. The filthy ‘comedian’ totally bombed (couldn’t even deliver her lines-much like the Seth Meyers weak performance). Put Dinner to rest, or start over!” West, on the other hand, had taken a hiatus from the world of tweets and returned only in April. But while he started off with some innocuous motivational messages, he quickly began talking up right-wing figures like Candace Owens. Facebook isn’t faring any better. It’s still picking up the pieces from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which led to countless users quitting the social network giant and a congressional hearing for co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. YouTube is plagued with alt-right theorists and immature personalities such as Logan Paul. who have huge followings, and Reddit has a similar set of issues. Add it all up, and lots of folks are ready to disconnect for a while. Over the past 90 days, “Social Media + Society” has a 29 percent positive score on Social, with words driving the vibe like “ruined,” “hate,” “threat,” and “damaging.” –Alex Shultz
