Do your teeth say anything about your personality? In some ways, they might. They are important to your overall health and your body, so is it too hard of a stretch to think that they might be able to indicate your personality type?
To research this, we went to a few different sources, including The Smilist Dental. Here’s what we found out.
1. Teeth Grinding: One of the biggest personality indicators with your teeth has to do with grinding. Grinding can happen during the day or at night. Also known as bruxism, grinding is where you slide your teeth back and forth across each other. It can cause serious damage to your teeth while also causing jaw pain.
Teeth grinding is shown to occur more in people who are stressed, more high-strung by nature, competitive, and anxious. In some cases, it is a simple bite malalignment, but your mental state can still have a lot to do with whether you grind your teeth or not.
2. Home Care: Another big personality indicator with your teeth is your home care. Some people are very indifferent to home hygiene and will brush when they feel like it rather than the recommended twice daily. Do not forget the recommendation to floss once daily.
People who take care of their teeth are usually more organized and have integrated daily care into their routines. People who brush erratically are more likely to live less off of a schedule and work a little more chaotically. People who do not care for their teeth also have not made their health a priority, which also speaks to certain personality types.
3. Dental Checkups: Much like with home care, whether you go to the dentist says something about your personality. The general recommendation is that you pay your dentist a visit twice a year for routine cleanings and once a year for a checkup with the dentist, including having x-rays done.
There are many reasons that people do not go to the dentist. Cost is certainly one limiting factor and it is not likely to speak to your personality as much as your economic situation. That said, some people have extreme dental phobia and would not want to step foot in a dental office. Others will make their appointments every six months like clockwork and never break them. Dental phobia is not a personality either, but people who do not keep to regular checkups due to a lack of prioritization definitely have a personality issue involved.
4. Tooth anatomy: There are some beliefs out there that the anatomy of your teeth will indicate certain personality traits as well. These include:
Lateral Incisors: Lateral incisors that are more prominent or pointier are meant to indicate that you might have a more powerful or aggressive personality. If your lateral incisors are flattened or have rounded tips, you are more likely to have a passive personality. If they are quite small, you might be a pushover.
Front teeth: The shape of your front teeth is supposed to be indicative of your age. Younger people will have rectangular central incisors with rounded corners, while older people will have a squarer shape.
5. Habits: Your teeth can also be windows into habits or even medical conditions that you are suffering from. They will reveal a lot to your dentist, whether you explain your situation or not.
The most common indicator is the rampant decay that can happen from long-term drug abuse. You might be recovered and sober, but your teeth might still be showing what kinds of issues you had in the past. Likewise, people who suffer from eating disorders often have marks left on their molars. This will be less obvious to those around you, but known by your dentist. Less concerning habits, such as drinking coffee, will result in stains on your teeth, calling you out for your habit.
While your teeth cannot tell the world everything about you, your smile still says a lot by itself. It can show that you are in good health, happy, and that you are confident. Take good care of your teeth and maintain checkups so you can really let your personality show.
