On his last day running the company he had spent eighteen years building, Charles “Dr. Charlie” Powell, M.D., gathered his roughly 500 employees into a single room and told them something most of them never expected to hear. He was leaving the next morning to get help for a problem he had carried since long before any of them came to work for him. That moment marks the real turning point in Dr. Charlie’s story.
Dr. Charlie built his early reputation in stages, first in uniform, then in medicine, then in business. He served sixteen years as a combat medic and officer across the Army and Navy, then spent nearly two decades building a Dallas healthcare system large enough to attract a major buyer. None of that success resolved a struggle that had followed him for years.
Eighteen Years in the Making
Dr. Charlie enlisted at nineteen, scoring high enough on the military aptitude test to train as a combat medic. He finished that training the same week the first Gulf War began. A Navy scholarship later paid for his medical degree at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, and he completed his residency in Family Medicine at the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Florida.
He left the Navy in 2005 as a Lieutenant Commander and moved to the Dallas area, where he joined a small medical practice. Over the next eighteen years, that practice grew into Healthcare Associates of Texas, a regional healthcare system covering the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The company was acquired in 2022.
For Dr. Charlie, the sale did not feel like an ending. It forced him to face something he had been outrunning for years.
What He Had Been Carrying
Post-traumatic stress disorder, commonly known as PTSD, had followed Dr. Charlie since his years in the military, and by the time he sold his company, it had become difficult to manage on his own. Sleep rarely lasted more than an hour or two at a stretch. The town hall came just before he left the country to begin a personal healing journey.
He now describes that journey as one of the most important decisions of his life. Paired with real preparation and steady follow-up care, it gave him a clarity he had not felt in years, enough to make him reconsider what to build next.
That question led back to 2004, when his son was born with an exceptionally rare chromosomal condition involving chromosomes 7 and 11. No doctor could offer the family a timeline or a precedent to follow. Dr. Charlie often calls his son one of the best teachers he has ever had, a joyful kid who greets every stranger he meets and waits patiently for a reply. Years watching his son move through the world planted an idea in Dr. Charlie that he could not shake: a place built for families raising a child with special needs, where they would not need to explain themselves at every turn.
A Second Career, Built for His Son
That idea became Solo Vive in 2024, a company whose name comes from the Spanish phrase for “just live.” Solo Vive now sits atop several ventures, and the most personal of them is Saint Charlie Resorts.
The name carries its own explanation. Dr. Charlie has said that three miracles are traditionally required to earn sainthood, and his son had already given him more than that. The goal behind the brand stays straightforward. Build resort destinations where families raising a child with special needs can relax instead of mapping out every possible complication.
The market gap backing that goal is well documented. Research from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, a group that certifies travel professionals in autism-friendly service, found that 87% of parents surveyed said they currently do not take vacations with their children.
Dr. Charlie built his early projections around a narrow slice of that population, non-traveling families earning above a set income threshold. Even using conservative numbers, he estimated a need for roughly 11,000 hotel rooms in Mexico alone. Renovation is already underway at the flagship Saint Charlie property, with a soft opening targeted for 2027 and plans to expand to 60 rooms, along with a dedicated activity center. Additional locations are being scouted in the Dominican Republic, and investors based in Bahrain have shown interest in the concept. A few hospitality brands currently offer limited programming specifically for autism, but none address the broader range of physical and intellectual needs that Saint Charlie Resorts intends to cover.
Dr. Charlie keeps circling back to what drives the work. “These parents get up and go to their job every day,” he said. “And they come home every night to go to work. Every weekend. Every holiday. There is no off time. If anybody needs a break, it’s them.”
That break has largely gone unmet by the entire industry. Dr. Charlie intends to be the one who finally delivers it.
