You may think that working from the comfort of your home is easy, but it’s not. On the contrary, when trying to perform tasks without supervision or colleagues’ help, you can end up wasting your time. There are many distractions at home, more than there are in an office. At the same time, maintaining a healthy life-work balance when your home is also your office can be even more challenging. So, we have decided to create an actionable guide on organizing your work schedule when working from home.
Set Some Achievable Goals
Start by looking at your daily and weekly schedule. Set your priorities and write them on a piece of paper or in your agenda. If you have any important deadlines, use this agenda to set priorities and achieve your goals.
Be as realistic as possible with your schedule, as this will help you stick to your goals. Use time management apps, as they are very helpful when it comes to organizing your time. This will increase productivity and give you some time to focus on other life aspects.
If you think this part is unnecessary, keep in mind that’s exactly the way many Microsoft employees worked during the COVID-19 outbreak. When trying to relax, write down some of your personal goals. The more you focus on your personal life, the more motivation you will have for accomplishing your work goals as quickly as possible.
Take Breaks
When working from home, dinner breaks and ‘office hours’ get smudged. For this reason, it’s very important to remember to take breaks too. Serve coffee or tea, cook your meals, and take naps. Remember you work on your own terms and there’s no one to pressure you.
On your breaks, you could also take walks in nature, play with your pets, ask the people you work with what’s next on the task list, or exercise. If you are a gamer, play some retro games on a Nintendo switch or another console. You have no idea how much this will help you refocus.
Be kind to yourself and don’t overdo it with a tight schedule because it’s very important to relax, too. Having a flexible schedule when working from home is very important because it helps you remain focused on work.
Get Dressed for Work
If you are serious about work and want to improve your performance, get dressed for work and imagine you’re going to the office. Do your morning routine as if you’re not going to be home all day, and don’t forget that hygiene is important, too.
Our advice is to dress casually and not put on office clothes. As mentioned above, working from the comfort of a home can be challenging because you might want to relax too much.
If you need pressure when working, wear office clothes. But make sure you keep your office clothes separate from your casual attire. Dress to impress — and not only when you plan to video call your colleagues.
Create a Designated Workspace
If you work from home, it might be difficult to remain disciplined without an organized workspace. You can work from your couch or your bed if this is how you feel the most comfortable, but if you feel as if you need discipline, create a designated workspace.
If you can afford it, buy an ergonomic office chair – or at least make sure your chair doesn’t squeak because noise can be very bothering when working long hours. Don’t ‘agglomerate’ coffee mugs in your workspace because this might be distracting, too.
Clean your office as often as possible, as cleanliness helps you focus. They say that disorder helps you be more creative, which may be true. But it is certainly not the best way to stay productive, so make your pick here.
Reduce Distractions
Don’t turn on the radio or the TV when working from home. If you do, you will no longer focus on what you must do. Tell your family and friends you’re not available for talks and visits. Distractions are time-wasting and can hinder your performance.
Get a pair of noise-canceling headphones if your neighborhood is rather agitated. Some people may not have the same job as you, so they might be doing something else with their time. If you can’t work when there’s noise, you can always count on earplugs, too.
Other distractions when working from home include phone calls, emails, social media, and text messages. For this reason, you should keep your phone on mute when working. Try not to make too many phone calls, either. Set the phone into focus mode or other productivity apps that mute all notifications from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other personal social media accounts.
Make Post-Work Plans
Even when you have a strict work schedule, you still can become caught up in your tasks and end up working long hours. It’s very important to learn that you have time to do things tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, too. Plan your post-work time just like you plan your workday because taking time off is essential, too.
It doesn’t matter if you want to get together with your friends or go to the gym after work; you should always focus on your personal time. Your health is important because it helps you maintain a positive mindset when working. You can remain healthy and think positively when working only if you take time off.
If you don’t have special plans for your time off, just rest and sleep. Don’t forget you should always relax your brain and body after work. Sleep is very important, as it helps you regain your strength and focus.
Don’t Forget to Drink Your Coffee
Coffee gives you energy and thus helps you start the day. If you don’t like coffee, you can try green or black tea – or even clean water, as long as you hydrate. If you work an 8-hour schedule, take a coffee break mid-day, too. If you do, you will regain your energy to perform your tasks again. Try staying away from energy drinks because these are said to cause some serious health problems. Some jobs, for example, the role of a web developer or a news writer, may call for extra hours, but you should still treat those hours, even if they happen in the middle of the night, as ‘duty time.’
Be Consistent with Work
When working from home, you may not want to start working again after taking a break. You have no one to encourage you to do something, and this can impede your productivity. The solution to this is taking short breaks more often, and a longer break after completing a task.
Regardless of what you do for a living, whether this is web development or writing, keep in mind that you should remain consistent with your work. Do your job for at least six hours a day. It’s fine to work longer hours too, but make sure that you take enough time to rest.
Some companies that work remotely impose a work schedule of their own and ask you to use different apps that track your performance. This might be helpful if you can’t organize your schedule without any help.
Working from home might sound like a dream life but it is not. It’s just work, just like any other job. Regardless of what you might be doing next to that computer screen, you still need to do your tasks and give your best. And that requires maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which starts with the advice above.
