Listen America, it seems like we’re having a men’s sexy underwear problem that we keep sweeping under the rug. You can actually test it out for yourself on Google. If you type in the words “sexy underwear” on your Google search engine, the results probably look like the inside of your girlfriend’s underwear drawer. It’s littered with lacy panties and delicate thongs – feminine suggestions that imply the majority of men aren’t searching for more risqué undergarment designs.
However, data on Google search trends show that men’s sexy underwear is actually highly searched for in the U.S. with a monthly volume of over 30,000 searches. It seems that a large male population of the U.S. is at least discreetly searching for sexy men’s underwear, yet it’s still taboo to wear a jockstrap to work without your coworkers questioning your sexual orientation. The data just isn’t adding up with today’s gender norms. What exactly is holding men (regardless of sexual orientation) back from wearing more sexy underwear?
In order to break this down, let’s go back to the origins of sexy underwear. According to Wikipedia, Lady Duff-Gordon of Lucile developed the concept of lingerie in the late 19th Century with more freeing corsets that eventually led to more practical, modern-day bras. As for men’s lingerie, the market didn’t really exist until the recent expansion of men’s sexy underwear stores like Differio – an online men’s fashion store with a range of men’s trendy clothing including sexy male lingerie, boxer briefs, thongs, and jockstraps.
In general, the mass market of men’s underwear is usually created with practicality in mind instead of sexual appeal, but the demand for erotic male undergarment styles is clearly evident today. We can’t point fingers at exactly one person or corporation and say they’re to blame for an issue that goes as far back as ancient Egyptian loincloths. At least by opening the discussion, it makes us think twice about the way we perceive men’s underwear with regards to gender norms.
Do you find yourself wanting to buy sexy men’s underwear, but feel yourself holding back for a number of personal reasons? Here are some tips on how to deal with any underwear issues you might be facing.
Masculine Expectations
There’s a stigma in the U.S. that men have to live up to this stereotypical macho persona, such as hiding the fact that you have tear ducts and avoiding pink-colored clothing colors. In reality, the clothes you choose to wear don’t determine or compromise your sexuality. Although clothing can be a form of expression, the fact that a man likes to wear men’s jockstraps isn’t always connected with how he identifies sexually.
Relationship Doubts
One of the most obvious reasons you might be browsing for men’s sexy underwear is to impress your partner. Whether you’re surprising them for a special occasion or rekindling a dying flame, you’re probably wondering how your partner will react to men’s exotic underwear, especially if it’s still a new relationship. Switching up your usual routine in the bedroom is healthy for any relationship, even if it’s not their cup of tea.
Body Insecurities
There’s a misconception that only men with impossibly fit bodies can pull off certain styles of sexy men’s underwear, like jockstraps and thongs. This is just not true! Instead of comparing yourself with Instagram models, you should take a moment to embrace body positivity. You should remind yourself daily of all the good things you like about your body and how you can be the best version of yourself.
