Bedtimes: the bane of many a parent’s existence. They either go exceedingly well or epic disasters. It’s rare to have two similar nights in a row. For some parents, there is a short deadline to the bedtime shenanigans. Their kids quickly transition to going to sleep on their own.
My boys on the other hand? They’re dead set on having one of us in the room while they fall asleep. My husband and I alternate nights sitting with them.
My sons have always been snugglers. From holding hands and cuddling on the couch to extra bedtime snuggles, I cherish those moments. Nothing wipes away a no-good, rotten day like hugs and cuddles from my boys.
There are some days where I look forward to bedtime. It’s extra time with my boys. We talk tell stories about our days, and inevitably fall into a laughing fit at least once.
I also know that I will get frustrated, at least once. And that’s a conservative estimate. You see, by the time I get the boys in bed and asleep, most of my time at night is gone. It can be frustrating watching the clock tick away while I’m sitting when there are so many things I should/want/need to do. From cleaning up the house to working out to writing, I could easily fill that time.
But, I won’t. I won’t refuse that special bedtime routine. You see, at some point, my boys will grow out of this phase. They won’t ask me to stay with them until they fall asleep. I’m sure they won’t want me in their room, eventually.
They’re truly only this age once, and I want to cherish every moment of it. I will hold hands while they fall asleep and tuck them in over and over. It’s these small moments I will miss when they’re grown.
