These 10 phrases? Stolen from therapists, hostage negotiators, and my own damn failures.
Why Most “Trust Tips” Fail
They sound like this:
“Utilitize synergistic paradigms to optimize relational bandwidth.”
Stop. People smell scripts. They crave real.
THE PHRASES (USE THEM TOMORROW):
1. “I don’t know.”
Why it works: Admitting ignorance = strength. Harvard proved it.
Robot trap: “I lack sufficient data points.”
Human fix: “Honestly? No clue yet. Give me ’til Friday.”
2. “You were right about [THING].”
Why it works: Validation = oxytocin dump. They feel seen.
Example: “You were right about skipping that meeting — saved us 3 hours.”
3. “Help me understand…”
Why it works: Disarms egos. FBI negotiators use this.
Never add: “…your insane take.”
4. “I fucked up. Fixing it like this: [ACTION].”
Why it works: Failure + ownership = 4x trust (Stanford).
Data point: 89% of people trust leaders who own mistakes.
5. “What’s your nightmare here?”
Why it works: Unlocks fears. Instant depth.
Use when: Stuck in negotiations.
6. “Based on your experience…”
Why it works: Flatters and leverages their brain. Genius.
7. “I trust your call.”
Why it works: Delegation = respect. Stop micromanaging.
8. “No.”
Why it works: Boundaries scream self-respect. “Yes” means nothing without it.
9. “How can I make this easier for you?”
Why it works: Service > sales. Therapist’s secret weapon.
10. “What would make this a 10/10 for you?”
Why it works: Reveals hidden standards. Skips vague feedback.
