I leaned on you drunk at karaoke after botching Tom Petty’s “The Waiting” and said it. That was the first time. I’d always botched “The Waiting” and always went first, but you didn’t mind. You were the first to say it back, like this: “I love you, too.”
I knew you meant it, so I jotted “She’s the One” on a napkin and handed it to the DJ. When I came back, you slipped me a receipt with “Kiss Me” written on it, so I did. I closed the night singing “Stand by Me,” and I knew you always would.
