Men are from Mars, women are from Venus, but we all live on Earth and have to follow Earth’s rules. There are some huge differences between how men and women operate in society and how society treats them, but that’s an article for another day. In this one, we’re going to focus on the darker side of humanity in order to see how the sexes compare.
Men are nearly twice as likely to commit suicide.
You probably already knew that the rate of suicide is higher in men than it is in women. It’s a statistic that seems to get thrown around by the media every time a major Hollywood star takes their own life. But what you might not know is that many of the things associated with a high risk of suicide are more prevalent in women.
Depression is 1.7x more likely to occur in young women than young men, yet men are 1.8x more likely to commit suicide. The differences are at their greatest between the ages of 20 and 49. During this time there is a bigger gap between the number of women with depression and the number of men, and there is also a considerably bigger gap between the number of men that kill themselves and the number of women.
Of course, it doesn’t really have anything to do with depression itself, but the way that those men and women respond to it and to the way they think society perceives it. Young men are more at risk because they are more prone to hiding their feelings, which results in them not getting professional help and not even getting support from their friends and family.
Depression is a terrible thing and anyone who feels that the only way out is to take their own life needs helps. Fortunately, that help is available. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255.
Many of us understand how debilitating depression can be, and we’re all more than happy to help our friends and family members if they feel that way. So if you find yourself thinking those thoughts and you’re bottling everything up to avoid coming off as weak, cut the macho crap and call the lifeline and tell someone. No one deserves to feel like that and there’s nothing wrong with opening up.
Men are more likely to kill.
There is a myth that all serial killers are male. That’s simply not true, but a large proportion of them certainly all. 98% of mass shootings are carried out by men and 93% of all serial killers are male.
When it comes to multiple sadistic murders, men are far more likely to kill than women, with most US killers being young white or black males (only 8.5% are Hispanic and fewer than 1% are Asian).
The odds of a woman being the perpetrator in a single murder are a little higher at over 11%, but that still means that men are nearly 10 times more likely to kill. When women kill they usually know their victims, whereas a high percentage of male murderers kill at random. Nearly half of all female murderers kill a significant other, while 7.5% murder a child, usually their own. The majority of the rest kill a family member, friend or colleague.
Children are more likely to be killed by their mother than their father and women are also more likely to be behind nursing home abuse cases, but overall, men are far more violent and homicidal.
Women are more likely to make a career out of shoplifting.
Shoplifting peaks between the ages of 21 and 23, at which time men steal more than women, but women are more likely to continue stealing as they age. The only exception seems to be when they get married and add the “Mrs.” prefix to their name, at which point the amount they steal on a daily basis drops considerably.
We could speculate that women are more likely to be left looking after the baby and that a higher percentage of them could be single mothers looking to put food on the table, but it’s hard to find any concrete stats on that. What we do know, however, is that women tend to target clothes and hair products, focusing on brands like Gucci, Dior, GHD, and hairstraightenerstudio.com, while men are more likely to steal expensive electronic equipment from the likes of Apple and Samsung.
Women are more likely to fall for scams (except those that are travel-related).
Online scams cost the global economy tens of billions of dollars every year and all age demographics fall for them, but young women seem to be the most at risk. We have all heard stories of dating scams that target middle-aged women and mail scams that target older women, but it’s actually the 25-34 age group that falls for them the most and stats suggest that professional women are most at risk.
When it comes to travel scams, men are more susceptible than women and the numbers get a little closer where dating scams are concerned. The stereotype suggests that women are more vulnerable because they are more likely to use these sites and to fall in love through these sites, but you might be surprised to know that men are 4% more likely to find love through a dating site, even though some cleverly marketed sites have made male daters somewhat dubious about whether they are talking to actual women.
