How often have you heard a man say something that didn’t quite sit right with you… but you brushed it off because you didn’t want to seem dramatic, overly sensitive, or God forbid “too much”?
Maybe you told yourself:
“Eh, he probably didn’t mean it like that.”
Or “I’m probably just overthinking this.” ♥♥
But deep down, something in your gut whispered: Girl, pay attention.
And here’s the thing — men give you clues about who they are from the very beginning. From the very first text, date, conversation, or half-hearted emoji response.
Words can be charming, persuasive, and sometimes downright intoxicating.
But they can also be a man’s way of subtly (or not-so-subtly) signaling exactly what to expect from him down the road.
So, let’s unpack a few of these sneaky little red flags together, shall we?👇
Number 1: “I Like You, But…”
Listen — the moment a man drops a “but” after I like you, whatever follows doesn’t matter.
Seriously. You could zone out right then and there and save yourself the headache.
Because what he’s actually saying is: I like you, but not enough to commit to you, show up for you, or treat you like a priority.
It sounds like this:
-
“I like you, but I’m not ready for a relationship.”
-
“I like you, but my job is crazy right now.”
-
“I like you, but I’m just focusing on myself at the moment.”
Translation?
I like you, but not enough to act like it.
And here’s where it gets messy: the more you ask for clarification, the more confusing it becomes. Because instead of being honest, many men will say just enough to keep you interested, without actually giving you what you deserve.
Some don’t want to seem like the bad guy. Others just want to keep you on the back burner. Either way?
They’re wasting your time.
If a man really likes you, he’s not handing out excuses.
He’s making plans, showing up, calling, texting, investing his time and energy, and moving things forward like a grown adult.
No “buts.” Period.
Number 2: “I Don’t Like Texting or Talking on the Phone”
Oh boy, this one. 👏
How many times have you heard this classic?
He tells you he’s “bad at texting,” he “forgets to respond,” or he’s “not really a phone person.” 📱
And for a hot minute, you give him the benefit of the doubt.
You don’t want to seem clingy, so you convince yourself: Maybe he’s just different.
Spoiler alert: he’s not.
When a man is genuinely interested in you, he makes an effort to stay connected — in whatever way you two can. He might not love typing out long paragraphs, but you better believe he’s gonna check in, send you memes, or call just to hear your voice.
Because when someone values you, keeping the connection alive matters.
Now, full disclosure — I’m not a huge texter myself.
But when I first started dating my partner? You’d better believe I was sending good morning texts, funny GIFs, and calling at night to say hey.
And here’s a truth bomb you might not wanna hear:
There’s always a woman he will text first. Always someone he will call without being asked.
And if you’re not her? Don’t settle for that.
You deserve to be the woman someone is excited to talk to, not the one chasing down a half-baked “sorry, I’ve just been busy.”
Number 3: “I’ve Never Met Anyone Like You…”
Sounds flattering, right?
Cue the butterflies.
But if he’s saying this two weeks in — or worse, after two dates — pause.
Because as lovely as it sounds, it’s giving love bombing energy.
When a man starts laying it on thick too soon — saying you’re different, special, not like other girls — before he even knows your last name or your middle-of-the-night snack preferences… that’s not real intimacy.
That’s strategy.
It’s designed to fast-track your emotional investment before you’ve had a chance to see who he actually is.
And while it feels nice in the moment, this kind of whirlwind flattery often fades the minute you start asking for consistency.
A real connection unfolds slowly.
It takes time, conversations, vulnerability, and actions — not just sweet words and empty promises.
So the next time you hear “You’re unlike anyone I’ve ever met,” ask yourself:
How could he possibly know that after three brunches and a FaceTime?
If he’s serious, he’ll prove it with time.
Number 4: “I’ve Never Had a Healthy Relationship Before”
Okay, at first this might sound vulnerable. Honest. Maybe even hopeful.
You might find yourself thinking:
“Wow, maybe he’s finally ready to change.”
But tread carefully here, my friend.
Because what he’s actually revealing is that he may not have the emotional tools or self-awareness to be in a healthy relationship — and unless he’s actively doing the work to fix that, it’s not your job to be his relationship rehab.
Watch out for other versions of this too:
-
“I’ve always had bad luck with women.”
-
“Girls have never really understood me.”
These statements subtly paint him as the perpetual victim in every past relationship — and if he hasn’t taken accountability for his role in those situations, what makes you think things will magically be different with you?
History tends to repeat itself when people don’t grow.
And it’s not your job to be the one exception.
Final Thoughts:
At the end of the day, dating isn’t about decoding mixed signals, clinging to potential, or convincing someone to treat you right.
It’s about listening to what people tell you about themselves — especially in those quiet little moments when their guard drops.
Trust your gut.
If something feels off, it probably is.
And remember:
You are not too sensitive.
You are not overreacting.
You are not asking for too much.
You’re asking for the bare minimum — and you deserve someone who’s excited to meet you there.
