Take the distinctive pink associated with breast cancer awareness or the many rainbows and color palates of the LGBT community. Now, gun control advocates nationwide have claimed orange. The #WearOrange campaign was started after the death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, a Chicago teen killed in a 2013 shooting. Friends and family of Pendleton wore orange clothing in her honor after the shooting, and the hashtag took off this year shortly before Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 1. Over the past 30 days, 75 percent of social media opinions were on-board with #WearOrange. Not everyone was wearing orange for the same reason, though. The National Rifle Assn. called on Twitter followers to post pictures of their orange-colored hunting gear, a move critics said was tone-deaf. “They have attempted and failed to co-opt a day to honor gun violence victims and survivors and talk about our nation’s gun crisis in a non-polarizing way,” Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts told NBC News on Friday. The positive-opinion number does not include anyone going after the NRA for its attempted appropriation. –Hugo Guzman
