People fall in love in mysterious ways. Some find it with the best invisible red line story, while others find it in awkward places.
I found love right where I was, in the invisible red line, knowing she was the perfect being. Yet, my practice proposal didn’t go as planned.
I woke up feeling so good; the air smelled so nice, and the atmosphere felt fresh and easy. I had just spent a perfect night of cuddles and quality time with my significant other.
I made her breakfast and served her in bed. Then, I thought it would be cool to practice a marriage proposal. I was bursting with emotions and felt it’d be good to try since I would do it soon anyway.
First, I had issues picking the knee to bend. But my instinct soon made a choice; I went down on that knee and started. Halt!… she said. Please look at me while you do it.
I looked up at her face. And time stood still. Once it happened. I knew it was something every honest young man who ever proposed had gone through.
I had many emotions that I only felt were better explained so that you may know what your husband, brother, or son went through when he proposed as a young man.
…
What men feel when they propose — And what I discovered.
#1 — Why some men cry
Growing up, I was never a fan of watching movie proposal scenes, and I also never enjoyed seeing them in person.
If I were asked about my pet peeve in proposals, it would be why some men cry. I always thought it was some form of exaggeration. They may be too much or playing it out.
Now that I have practiced a proposal with someone I love, I know what it means. Men who cry while proposing are honest.
When I was down on one knee, I felt the flood of tears rising in my eye socket. For some reason, I could see the next 70 years to come. It felt like I just had a feeling of fulfillment.
I felt like I had just seen forever flash in my eyes as I watched us raise our kids, live life, and grow old together. That moved me to tears.
Love is indeed beautiful, especially when you are in love with someone who truly loves you the same way.
#2 — I needed to be specific even with the luggage
As if seeing the next 70 years in a split second wasn’t enough. I had to now say words that I truly felt for her.
Before bending that one knee, sending a goodnight message, afternoon drabble, or good morning message was never an issue. But this one was different.
I needed to be specific. I blame it on my honesty. It began well and ended sour for me.
I began saying the good things and the best times we’ve spent together. I continued to mention the challenges we’ve faced and the storms weathered together. I soon reached her bad attitude and found myself saying I would overlook them.
I’ve always pondered personally about whether changes should be made, but it felt like that one bent knee was on a truth-teller, and all I said was I don’t mind all the blemishes and downsides.
Proposals might be a disguised covenant for an honest man.
#3 — It’s a lifetime baggage
“Marriage is not a noun; it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get. It’s something you do. It’s the way you love your partner every day.” — Barbara De Angelis
It becomes your way of life and sticks with you forever. My practice proposal went from making the air fresh to sour, almost making me choke while saying the words… ‘Will you marry me?’
I felt like a piece of baggage was placed on my back. It could get lighter or heavier without control. And even if I marry and remarry, a truck full of baggage from other marriages will stick with me and keep piling up.
Then I felt like covering her mouth and telling her.. ‘if you dare say yes, you had better mean it.’ I don’t want to ever carry new baggage from another woman.
Honest men who propose do so with all their hearts, with faith that it should be the only time they ever do it.
So, if you’ve got an honest brother, friend, or man who was once married and is about to propose again, know that he once carried baggage with all his heart and is about to do the same again. She better be worth it.
#4 — Why some men just go at it
With thoughts of the baggage, specificity despite her bad attitudes, and my vulnerability. I concluded I wasn’t ready.
We both smiled and talked for a long about the practice proposal. We discussed finances, getting our careers right, and preparing even better.
But I soon reflected on that moment, and I knew all that had happened was pure. I know I’ll feel the same way for her in 100 years.
- Even when we are as rich as I ever imagined, I’ll love her like I do now.
- Even if she had the worst medical conditions, I’d still love her.
- I’ll love her in the bad, worse, worst times, the good, better, and best moments.
Right, that instant. I knew I would never be totally ready. I might as well just do it now, for real. That’s why some men get married just out of the blue.
Folks who realized this got married much earlier and moved on with life than those who were forever stuck in the loop of practice proposals, financial plans, and career stabilization.
Proposals are more than just emotional gestures.
Proposals are rituals and real commitments for honest men.
Never make a fool of an honest man when he proposes to you — It is better to tell him no than say yes and not mean it, as he would consider every moment.
He will consider his vulnerability, honesty, and vows. He will hold them dear to his heart and ensure that he lives by them like a Bible.
Proposals are sacred offerings by an honest man and a gift of assurance to an honest woman.
