There is quite an uproar over the Kellogg company’s boycott of Breitbart Media.
Those of us who value inclusion and acceptance are thrilled that Kellogg’s elected to pull their ads—and more importantly their dollars—from Breitbart, the mouthpiece of white supremacy.
White supremacists are, predictably, less enamored of this decision. #DumpKelloggs was trending on Twitter. Breitbart itself stated “If you serve Kellogg’s products to your family, you are serving up bigotry at your breakfast table,” citing the decision as Kellogg’s “declar[ing] hate for 45,000,000 readers.”
In their article, which urges readers to boycott Kellogg’s, Breitbart adds “We are fearless advocates for traditional American values, perhaps most important among them is freedom of speech.”
Yeah, I know. I rolled my eyes, too.
But Breitbart actually didn’t start out as a racist, pro-Trump bullhorn, according to Ben Shapiro, former editor-at-large at Breitbart, who worked closely with both Andrew Breitbart and Steve Bannon. In a piece he wrote for The Daily Wire, Shapiro said:
“Under Bannon’s leadership, Breitbart openly embraces the white supremacist white supremacy. Andrew Breitbart despised racism. Truly despised it. He used to brag regularly about helping to integrate his fraternity at Tulane University. He insisted that racial stories be treated with special care to avoid even the whiff of racism. With Bannon embracing Trump, all that changed. Now Breitbart has become white supremacy go-to website, with Yiannopoulos pushing white, ethno-nationalism as a legitimate response to political correctness, and the comment section turning into a cesspool for white supremacist mememakers.”
Back to Kellogg’s. I’m not sure why they are getting most of the press on this. In fact, several companies have pulled their advertising off of the site, including Allstate, EarthLink, and Warby Parker, to name a few. It seems like that should be big news.
But here’s the REALLY BIG news that no one, except @ShaunKing at NY Daily News, is talking about: AppNexus pulled their advertising, too.
Never heard of them? Me, neither.
According to King, AppNexus is a behemoth in online advertising, processing more than 2.5 Billion-with-a-B dollars in advertising annually. And while Kellogg’s may, as Breitbart notes, “make virtually no revenue impact on Breitbart.com,” it’s hard to imagine that the AppNexus’ pullout won’t.
Why did AppNexus leave? As an aside to the Kellogg’s story, Fortune.com indicates that “an audit of the site’s content determined that it violates the advertising network ban on hate speech.”
Apparently, hate speech is the one use of Free Speech Breitbart can support.
Let’s be clear, as King is in his story: These are companies, not social justice organizations. They are looking to turn a profit, not turn America into a utopia. But even they understand that we cannot allow this bigotry to become normalized, and especially not at the highest levels of government. [See list in embedded tweet, below.] Props to all of them for standing up for truth and justice.
Breitbart Media may have been Andrew Breitbart’s baby, but when he died, Steve Bannon adopted it and raised it to become what it is today: a repository for the worst of humanity.
In November, Donald Trump has appointed Steve Bannon as Chief Strategist. This has been controversial, to put it mildly. Bannon, for his part, reportedly “gets a kick out of” the outrage, stating in an article for the Hill, “Darkness is good,” he said. “Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power. It only helps us when they get it wrong. When they’re blind to who we are and what we’re doing.”
“They” are not blind to you, Steve. Kellogg’s sees you. As does Allstate and AppNexus. For that matter, so do the majority of the American people. We see you for who you are, not a Patriot, not a Conservative, but as you describe yourself.
Darth Vader. Satan.
Trump obviously drained the swamp to install a cesspool.

Good to see articles on this site calling out Trump for who he is.
At this point, I tend to tune out at the buzzword “white supremacy.” Much like the other buzzwords the regressive left has fallen in love with, it doesn’t mean anything anymore.
o boycott a man who got over 46 percent of the votes does not make sense to me. Media under his influence might even become more powerful. You cannot simply ignore a movement supported by 46 percent of voters. When Trump – truly a political outsider – was showing up as a candidate, he was the target of fun and scorn at the beginning, now after he won, he is the target of boycott. https://youtu.be/PyEXshBOwEU Instead of making fun out of Trump or to boycott him, it would be better to think about why the own candidate – Hillary Clinton… Read more »
With the exception of a couple names on the list, I don’t recognize any of them. Besides, I shop off brands, name brands are too expensive.
That’s correct. Such a ridiculous economic boycott can never work. It might even financially backfire. Without advertisements in the media, regardless if you like their political orientation or not, your business might decline as you are selling less. CEOs of such companies should better use their brain and think about why so many, more than 46 percent of all voters, decided to support a political outsider. To make fun out before the election and now after he won, to boycott angrily a successful political outsider does not make sense, not to talk about other crazy actions like to smash cars… Read more »
Love the video!!!
BTW, from what I caught on the radio this morning, Hillary was right about Wisconsin…. so far there is a ONE vote disparity in her favor
