One that usually appears late at night, when the phone goes silent, and honesty gets louder.
Are we together because we love each other
or because the thought of being alone scares us more?
Loneliness Can Masquerade as Love
Not every relationship begins with love.
Some begin with:
- needing comfort
- wanting consistency
- fearing silence
- avoiding emptiness
Being with someone can feel better than being alone.
But comfort is not the same as connection.
Love Feels Like Choice, Not Escape
Love is intentional.
It says:
“I want you.”
Fear of being alone says:
“I don’t want this feeling.”
One pulls you toward a person.
The other pushes you away from yourself.
Signs You Might Be Afraid of Being Alone
Sometimes the relationship feels “fine” — but empty.
You may notice:
- You stay even when you’re unhappy.
- You fear ending things more than staying.
- Silence together feels heavy, not peaceful.
- you miss the idea of a relationship more than the person
That’s not love dying.
That’s loneliness choosing safety over truth.
Love Doesn’t Disappear When You’re Alone
Here’s a simple test:
When you imagine being alone, do you miss them
Or do you miss having someone?
Love is specific.
Fear is vague.
Why We Settle
Because society romanticizes being chosen.
Because being single feels like failure.
Because starting over feels exhausting.
So we stay.
We adjust.
We convince ourselves it’s enough.
But “enough” is not the same as fulfilled.
Healthy Love Feels Calm, Not Desperate
Real love doesn’t feel urgent.
It doesn’t feel like you’re racing against loneliness.
It feels steady.
Grounded.
Chosen.
You’re not together because you’re afraid to leave.
You’re together because you want to stay.
The Courage to Ask the Question
Asking this question doesn’t mean you don’t love your partner.
It means you respect yourself enough to want honesty.
Because love built on fear eventually collapses.
Love built on choice has space to grow.
Final Thought
Being alone is uncomfortable.
But being with the wrong person while feeling alone is worse.
Love shouldn’t be a hiding place from loneliness.
It should be a place you choose, even when you’re complete on your own.
And when it’s real
You don’t stay because you’re afraid to be alone.
You stay because you’ve found someone worth choosing every day.
