Ingredient Notes
Please keep in mind that this is just a quick overview. Visit the full recipe for amounts and instructions!
Tomato Sauce: The base of the taco sauce, which gives it a smooth, rich texture and a naturally sweet, deeply umami flavor. I like to use the simple organic canned variety.
Apple Cider Vinegar:Â Adds a tangy kick to the homemade taco sauce, helping make it taste more vibrant and well-rounded. If you do not have ACV, red wine vinegar makes a suitable alternative.
Hot Sauce of Choice: Imparts an extra layer of spice and complexity of flavor to your sauce. I love to use a habanero-based hot sauce, but any will work!
Chili Powder:Â Gives the taco sauce its signature warmth and earthy depth with its blend of spices and dried chiles.
Smoked Paprika:Â Provides a nice, woodsy flavor and subtle smokiness that helps temper the tanginess of the apple cider vinegar and the sweetness of both tomato sauce and sugar.
Garlic Powder:Â Gives a garlicky flavor that deepens the overall taste of the taco sauce.
Onion Powder: Imparts a subtle sweetness and mildly oniony flavor that won’t overpower the sauce.
Ground Cumin:Â Boosts the smokiness and earthy flavors of the sauce.
Salt:Â Enhances the natural flavors of the other ingredients.
Sugar or Maple Syrup:Â Acts as the flavor balancer that helps tone down the acidity of the apple cider vinegar and the intensity of the spices. Any sweetener will do!
Black Pepper:Â Adds extra bite and subtle pungency to the sauce.
Cayenne: Increases the sauce’s heat and spiciness. If you are sensitive to spice, feel free to omit it.

- Drizzled over nachos.
- Served as a dip for purple sweet potato fries, air fryer tofu bites, or tortilla chips.
- Mixed into slow cooker vegetarian chili.

- Used as a marinade for tofu or tempeh.

Expert Tips
- If the taco sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Opt for using a no-salt-added tomato sauce to control the sodium level.
- To give you complete control of the sauce’s spiciness, start with smaller amounts of the cayenne pepper and hot sauce and add more as needed.
- Try adding fresh lime juice or oregano for extra depth and richness, sun-dried tomatoes for extra umami flavor, or crank up the spiciness by throwing in red pepper flakes, serrano peppers, fresh jalapeno peppers, ghost peppers, or habanero powder.

Notes
Storage and Reheating
Store the homemade taco sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
For longer storage, consider keeping the sauce in a freezer-safe container, bag, or ice cube trays inside the freezer, then consume it within six months.
Before using, thaw the sauce overnight, and then reheat it over low heat.
