Storm King Comics: “Creating Modern Horror: Scaring People in Scary Times”
Founder Sandy King Carpenter joined by artist Cat Staggs and author Amanda Deibert, both of whom collaborated with King on Death Mask, the first graphic novel from Storm King’s “Dark & Twisted” imprint. Writers and creators Neo Edmund, Sara Richard, Sian Mandrake, Richard P. Clark and Sean Sobczak, all of whom have helped create terrifying tales for Storm King Comics.
“New York Comic-Con has always, first and foremost, been about comics, and comics have always been about thrilling readers—and, in our case, making it impossible for them to go to bed at night,” King Carpenter said. “So we’re incredibly excited to create this comics-focused panel that addresses the challenges and excitement of creating stories and captivating readers.”
This panel was a masterclass in horror storytelling that touched upon many aspects of writing particularly about what frightens us, how to make horror engaging and age appropriate levels of the horror genre!

FOR ALL MANKIND Season Four
In a way, i look back at the first season with nostalgia. It was based on actual science of the era, it was more of a period piece. With each season it becomes more and more of a science fiction show. The science is now more theoretical, I think that’s the big difference between where we are now and where we were in the first season. A lot of the conversations we have with our researchers debating competing theories we end up being referees and we choose what is more dramatically interesting. I think it becomes more challenging this way.
– Ben Nedivi (Executive Producer/Creator/Showrunner)
“Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since season three, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards.”
For All Mankind” is created by Emmy Award-winner Ron Moore, and Emmy nominees Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert. At our roundtable interviews, I got to speak with Ronald D. Moore (Executive Producer/Creator), Matt Wolpert (Executive Producer/Creator/Showrunner) & Ben Nedivi (Executive Producer/Creator/Showrunner), Garrett Reisman (NASA Tech Advisor), Seth Reed (Production Designer) & Esther Marquis (Costume Designer)
I asked Showrunner Ben Nedivi about how the show has grown over four seasons, assuming as the show progressed, it would get easier to tell the story. His response was the the exact opposite.-“Funny thing is is it hasn’t gotten any easier! it’s interesting you say that because most TV shows we know who our characters are, we know what our worlds are, our locations and sets. This show because we jump in time, part of the agreement we have with our audience is we have to change it up, introducing new characters, some characters go away, and the science changes. In a way i look back at the first season with nostalgia that it was based on actual science of the era, it was more of a period piece. With each season it becomes more and more of a science fiction show. I also learned that Costume Designer Esther Marquis flight suit design was chosen by NASA for the new ARTEMIS mission to the lunar surface!
I’ll share more of my round table interviews and a review of this critically acclaimed Apple TV+ shows incredible fourth season soon!
The 10-episode fourth season will make its highly anticipated global debut on Friday, November 10, 2023 on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday through January 12, 2024.
Ed Catto leads Tripwire Panel at NYCC!
Exploring Start-Up Persistence and Creativity in Pop Culture
Ithaca College’s Ed Catto moderated a publishing entrepreneurs panel at New York’s Javits Center this October called Tripwire and Over 30 years of Comics Journalism.

Here I am with the “TRIPWIRE 30” panelists & moderator Ed Catto
Tripwire was founded back in 1992 and it is the preeminent UK comics and genre publication (with a home on the web and in print) quarterly magazine. But now as comics journalism has changed over the past thirty years, how do you cover the worlds of comics and genre while playing to the strengths of the format that you cover them in- online and print? Is there still even a place for covering this sector in print?
Panelists included publisher Joel Meadows, Andy Coleman, Dan Berry and Forbes Magazine’s Rob Salkowitz.
It was a lively discussion and I won a copy of Tripwire’s 30th anniversary issue!
