This post is the opinion of the the author and does not necessarily represent The Good Men Project.
Activists and lawmakers have spoken out against the Civil War monuments and statues, calling them a reminder of the oppression of black Americans and warning that they could serve as rallying points for racists. As some state legislatures act to remove Civil War monuments – or consider doing so – far-right groups have acted to preserve them, with marches and protests. The most violent of these happened over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va., where a protest turned bloody and one person died. Such incidents, and other far-right rallies, are probably why Confederate statues get 72 percent negative sentiment. Social calls the white nationalists “traitors” and is pretty unequivocal in its opinion that the time has come to take the statues down — before they become reminders of entirely new tragedies. –Hugo Guzman
