On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, members of our new Environmental Social Interest Group met for its weekly teleconference. One of the goals of the group is to help people think about environmental issues in terms of every-day living, incorporating awareness into decisions that motivate our actions.
The result of the discussion on that subject is this list of writing prompts:
Good Men Project Publisher, Lisa Hickey:
“I’m always looking for ways to multi-task. We know that people must have exercise to stay healthy. To keep on moving is a big piece of what makes health. I’ve read where strength training in nursing home allowed 75% of the resident participants to stop using their walkers! It would be great if there were environmental activism projects or events that were also physical exercise. Plant trees. Not just go to the gym.”
Tell the GMP readers about an environmental activism project that is physical exercise.
Group Co-Leader James Blakely:
“Nature walks and time with youth is important to me. I’d like to see and read about projects that involve going out for a nature walk combined with a youth, where you show them nature, identify plants and trees and bugs. I’d like to see people organize educational nature outings with youth. I’d also like to know stories of everyday environmental heroes.”
Tell the GMP readers about your experience with teaching youth about nature related to an outing.
Introduce the GMP readers to an “every day” environmental hero you know personally or through research.
Or, tell us about how YOU, yourself reduce your impact on our environment.
Other members in the group discussion came up with these:
- Language as writing prompt:The way “global warming” changed to “climate change” and more people got behind it.
- Native Americans at #NoDAPL called themselves water protectors, not protestoes.
- The way we use language.
- What about the politics of Trump’s EPA pick?
- How can entrepreneurs make Environmentalism economically profitable, not the enemy to economic prosperity?Example: Patagonia- donated every penny of profit to environmental profit – they raised $10 Million!
Now is the time when people realize what we have to lose; they realize what is at stake.
Tell GMP Your Environmentalism Story!
Here is a previous Call for Submissions related:
Plastic Bags – A Call for Submissions
We use plastic bags almost every day, but only for 25 minutes. Then, the bag will take 100 to 500 years to break down. Tell our readers why Plastic Bag-free Day is so very important.

We are a “participatory media company”—which means we don’t just have content you read and share and comment on but it means we have multiple ways you can actively be a part of the conversation. As you become a deeper part of the conversation (Which really is “The Conversation No One Else is Having), you will learn all of the ways we support our Writer’s Community—community FB groups, weekly conference calls, classes in writing, editing platform building and How to Create Social Change.
