Family: the one F-word that can make you smile, cry, scream, or all three at once.
Every family has its drama.
You might think yours holds the world record, but let me assure you, no one escapes unscathed.
Not even those Instagram-perfect households where everyone’s teeth sparkle in holiday photos. Behind every closed door, there’s a story — and it’s usually a little messy.
Let me take you on a quick trip down memory lane.
My husband’s family is the kind of picturesque, movie-script family people like me could only dream of growing up.
Two loving parents?
Check. ✅
Siblings who actually like each other?
Check. ✅
Family vacations where no one threatens to leave mid-trip?
Check. ✅
They had love, values, morals, respect — the whole package. Sure, they worked hard, but there’s no denying the privilege that comes with such a sturdy foundation.
Meanwhile, my family?
Oh, we weren’t just on a different page; we were reading entirely different books.
Poverty wasn’t just a chapter in my life — it was the whole damn plotline. Love wasn’t a guarantee; it was a rare, fragile thing. Marriages weren’t about “soulmates” or “happily ever afters” but survival.
Who’s paying rent?
Who’s feeding the kids?
Those were the real questions. You didn’t get to dream about “the one” when you were busy figuring out how to keep the lights on.
But here’s the kicker: my husband’s family isn’t perfect either.
No one is.
Sure, they had what my childhood lacked, but they’ve had their share of heartbreak and stressors. Money, stability, or a seemingly picture-perfect setup doesn’t make anyone immune to life’s curveballs. Some families crack under financial strain; others crumble under the weight of expectations or skeletons in the closet.
So, what’s the moral here?
We all come with our baggage. Some suitcases are heavier than others, but everyone’s dragging something behind them.
And if every family was a spotless, drama-free paradise, wouldn’t life be unbearably dull?
Conflict shapes us.
The love we lacked teaches us to value it. The challenges we endure remind us what resilience looks like.
Take my story: growing up poor in a home where love was a luxury, I learned to fight for things people like my husband probably never had to think twice about.
And I’m better for it.
It’s why I value love so deeply now.
It’s why I think of my daughter and vow to give her what I didn’t have. That’s not bitterness talking; it’s gratitude.
My struggles made me who I am.
And my husband?
He’s learned from me, too. He’s learned that privilege isn’t just about money; it’s about experiences, empathy, and knowing how to connect with people whose lives look nothing like yours. His world isn’t as perfect as it seemed when I first stepped into it, but that’s okay. None of us are here to live in perfection. We’re here to navigate chaos, find meaning in it, and grow.
So, the next time you feel tempted to compare your family to someone else’s, remember this: everyone’s got skeletons — some are just better at hiding them. And that’s the beauty of humanity. The cracks in our foundations are where the light gets in.
Family drama isn’t a flaw; it’s the fabric of our existence. Embrace the mess, laugh at the absurdity, and remember — you’re not alone.
Now, go call your mom. Or don’t. I get it.

Hi, I’m Fiona, a writer going through an unexpected chapter in life.
I lost my job in April 2024, and my husband and I have been getting by on his small medical residency income. After stepping away from IVF, we were surprised and overjoyed to find ourselves pregnant, but it’s added financial stress as we prepare for this new journey.
Writing is my way of contributing to our family while covering essentials like groceries, bills and maybe items for our 🌈 miracle baby.
If you’d like to support us, your kindness would mean the world — every little bit helps. $1, $2…Anything is appreciated. Donate here (Venmo).
