By Alejandra Valadez
I never thought that someone could break your heart and then help you piece it back together,
but somehow you did
You made me feel like I was at fault for something that I had no idea was going to happen…
Something that shattered your heart and made you angry, angry at me
How could you think that I would do anything to hurt you?
How could you doubt our friendship?
For a whole year, I had to deal with guilt because perhaps I had done something to hurt you, but
didn’t know what it was
For a whole year, I had to deal with sadness because I sat just one row away from you and yet
you seemed so far
For a whole year, I had to deal with a broken heart because I was left without an explanation of
why our friendship had to end
But everything changed after that year… precisely on November 15th, your birthday
I got the courage to wish you the best on that special day and with a simple message we slowly
began talking
With every conversation I began to feel comfortable again, like nothing had happened
Weeks passed and I think our friendship only grew stronger, stronger than what it had been
Then months passed and it was different, well at least for me it was
You made me feel happy, safe, and loved, something I hadn’t felt in a while
You carefully helped piece my shattered self back together
Maybe you didn’t notice but I was in a much better place than when you had left
The days seemed brighter, laughter came more easily, and smiles never disappeared
Perhaps it seems like I’m exaggerating, but you make a difference in my life
You’re one of my best friends, you’re family
I don’t know what I would do without you
And if I’m honest, I would go through it all again—the confusion, the guilt, the anger, because in
the end it was always going to be better
I love you, friend.
