On Monday, all-American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson became the first to make good on such fears when it announced that it would move some manufacturing abroad because of retaliatory tariffs put in place by the European Union. The company also said declining sales was a factor in the decision, but Trump was quick to slam Harley on Twitter. “A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country,” Trump wrote on Tuesday. “Their employees and customers are already very angry at them.” The situation is fraught with irony because in 1983 then President Ronald Reagan imposed stiff tariffs on imports of foreign motorcycles specifically to save Harley, which The New York Times called “the sole surviving American maker of motorcycles.” Social media is riding with Trump on this one, with 74 percent of opinions online being dead-set against the iconic brand. According to CNBC, some employees are even of the opinion that the company had been planning the move long before the tariffs. “I think Harley is just using it as an excuse,” an employee identified only as “Mark” told CNBC on Wednesday. –Hugo Guzman
