For the most part, our planet remains quiet beneath our feet, equally holding up those of us who seek for balance and love and those who just spew destruction and hatred. Our Earth is a generous and non-judging home.
And she requires our immediate attention.
Here is what’s real. The living systems of our planet are failing at a pace and scale that we find near impossible to comprehend. And, truth be told, many of us would rather not try. Daunting doesn’t even begin to describe the mental energy required to understand the depth of what we are doing to our planetary home, to ourselves, and our children.
But despite our unwillingness to really see the devastation we are causing—the destruction of habitat, the mass extinctions, the literal pools of shit we create so we can enjoy a ham and cheese sandwich—global warming is happening. You don’t have to be a scientist to acknowledge its increasing effects once you take a look.
The blind rumors that global warming is nothing more than a hoax of the Left, or just some natural adjustment of the earth itself are still getting play—we’re still debating this—which is insane. How can it be that the head of our EPA is a climate change denier?
So, in the midst of this debate, do we call it “global warming” or “climate change”?
Global warming is a more accurate representation. Our planet is becoming warmer due to our introduction of greenhouse gasses and our destruction of Earth’s natural purifying systems, such as rainforests.
It’s unfortunate we accommodate the arrogance of ego and stupidity in the United States. Every time there is a snowstorm or cold snap, willfully ignorant people use the frigid temps as proof that our planet isn’t warming at all. “How can there be global warming when it’s so cold?” they self-righteously question, with their smugness hanging about them like so much cow flatulence. And our world continues to languish. So, we altered the name of this destructive process to “climate change” to help the deliberately unconscious avoid confusion.
This accommodation is a mistake. There is no time to appease ignorance. Especially the ignorance laced with hubris exhibited by some in leadership positions in our country, those who still deny the human created devastation of our environment. These people should not be accommodated, they should be removed from their positions of authority.
The seed of global warming is us—our actions and lack of awareness of their consequences, our need for never-ending growth, like a cancerous tumor, within a finite landscape. So, this is where we are today. We are shitting where we eat on a massive scale and any path to healing and a more balanced approach is fogged over in the usual, ego-crazy divisiveness and self-righteousness. What do we do?
We all have a worldview that we have accepted and act from. And for most of us, our worldview considers our planet as something separate from us. We deem Earth as the place we humans live, like our first apartment. This is the grand error that is the root cause of our disregard for the environment. If we understood that we actually are of Earth, we are nature, we are intertwined with the mechanisms of life, then perhaps we would strive to live in a more harmonious way.
This initial step of recognizing that we are Earthlings before anything else can lead to real change. And this is where it gets personal. Our worldview is our singular creation, and we should take full responsibility for its construction.
It’s easy to just accept the collective worldview as fact, without giving it serious consideration. And those “facts” that inform the current worldview of separation are empowered by the desire for gluttonous profit above the good of the people or harmonious balance.
It is in the best interest of the wealthiest among us that we don’t critically examine our worldview, or our lifestyles and buying habits as consumers. Because that could cost them money. And yet, it’s those very lifestyles and habits that are the cause of Earth’s catastrophic prognosis.
Our Earth and our grandbabies are asking us to critically examine the worldview that sees the environment as an external resource, there to use only for our consumption, comfort, and convenience. It’s time to consider how we consume, and if there might be a better way?
There are so many approaches to mitigating global warming and living in more balance with our world. And the seed to these approaches is in the creation of a more evolved worldview. Our species is being backed into a corner. We are being forced to consciously evolve ourselves or to die as a species. It’s really that dramatic.
Here’s an example: Our oceans are warming and becoming more acidic. And as the heat and acidity increases, our coral reefs are dying. The current timeline is about thirty years. Thirty years and we will lose a vital domino in our ecological system. And when one domino falls…
Thirty years. Why are we sleeping through this?
With a more evolved worldview, the changes that we need to make on a personal level become easier. When we understand that we are consciously evolving ourselves for the future of our grandbabies, it becomes natural to live in more sustainable and life-affirming ways.
We have the technology now to live in a manner that is much more in harmony with the living systems of our world. There just isn’t necessarily an immediate profit for the wealthy few to develop this technology to its potential. But we can force these changes if we have the collective will. And generating this will begins with an individual inquiry into the worldview that informs our decisions and actions. And if our worldview needs changing, then, as individuals we change it. And we share it with others. We align our decisions and actions with our re-tooled worldview based on the fact that we are all Earthlings.
We are nature! And we are speedily killing ourselves with our lack of understanding this. But we can change our minds and hearts to harmonize with our planet and align with life. And we can promote a new worldview with our dollars and at the ballot box…if we can just find the will.
