How to check your car’s oil.
I recommend getting your oil changed (at least) every 5,000 miles.

00:00
okay I had a lot of requests for how to
00:03
check your engine oil and so I’m gonna
00:04
show you how to do that it’s fairly easy
00:06
so don’t be intimidated by it you want
00:08
to pop your hood and then locate this
00:11
yellow on my engine that’s yellow I
00:14
think they’ve tried to standardize it
00:15
and louver cars but then mine even says
00:17
engine oil on it so just make sure
00:18
you’re checking the correct thing and
00:20
what we’re doing is this is a fairly
00:23
crude drawing but it just shows the
00:24
dipstick going down into the pan in the
00:26
bottom of your engine okay so that’s why
00:30
it’s important to be on a flat surface
00:31
so you’re getting an accurate reading I
00:33
would recommend doing this every time
00:34
you go to the to the gas station or
00:36
every other time while you’re filling up
00:38
just pop the hood and do what I’m gonna
00:40
do okay
00:49
and make sure you have it all the way
00:51
down in so you can get an accurate
00:53
reading and then you just look and on
00:55
mine it says F and L full or low and you
01:00
want to be somewhere in that range
01:01
and there’s or there could just be two
01:03
dots I think on older vehicles there’s
01:05
just two dots you just want to be in
01:06
that range and you want to pay attention
01:07
to the color of your oil too if it’s
01:10
like a light brown that’s good if it’s
01:13
black you better go get your oil change
01:14
– right because the oil oil is an
01:17
important part of your engine it keeps
01:19
all the parts lubricated okay
01:23
that’s about it but I’ve also had
01:26
requests for how to change your oil but
01:29
that’s not something I normally do
01:30
because I just don’t think it’s a good
01:31
use of my time by the time you pay for
01:34
the oil pay for the oil filter pay for
01:37
the oil pan whatever you’re gonna do to
01:41
catch the oil and a lot of people don’t
01:42
have places where they can work on cars
01:44
– so and you can get an oil change for
01:48
usually thirty or forty dollars just
01:51
look around look for coupons online so I
01:54
don’t recommend that Mike to my kids I
01:56
wouldn’t recommend it to you but I will
01:59
say that if you go there just be
02:00
prepared they might say oh yeah you need
02:03
an air filter you need windshield wiper
02:07
they do try to upsell you a lot of times
02:09
it’s a loss leader to get you in that’s
02:11
why it can be cheap so if you’re just
02:13
gonna get your oil change with big oil
02:14
change and then eventually I hope to
02:16
show you how to change a windshield
02:17
wiper obviously you know this is just
02:20
one car and each thing very each car
02:22
varies a little bit so but it gives you
02:24
the general idea that shows you that you
02:26
can have the confidence to figure out
02:28
how to did this yourself so anyway at
02:30
the end of this video I will add on what
02:34
my dipstick looks like the F and L so
02:36
you can see since I didn’t provide a
02:39
close-up for that anyway hope this was
02:41
helpful take care okay I wanted to show
02:46
you what that F and that L look like on
02:48
my BIP stick so that’s that’s it and
02:50
then this is the like the nice light
02:53
brown that you want to that you’re
02:54
looking for so you want to be in this
02:58
range right here right so you want to
03:00
have the oil be somewhere in their minds
03:01
obviously full but somewhere in here if
03:04
it’s below that you’re going to need to
03:05
add some oil if there’s nothing showing
03:08
here you definitely want to add some oil
03:10
and I’ll show you how to do that you
03:15
needed to just to temporarily get your
03:17
buy between oil changes this year if
03:19
it’s not registering on that dipstick or
03:21
if it’s below the L there’s just a
03:25
little top here that you screw off and
03:28
mine actually tells me what type of oil
03:31
to use to 5w 20 okay so then let’s take
03:35
your take your oil and dump it in I
03:37
actually happen to have 5w30 on hand and
03:40
if it’s oils not registering at all or
03:44
if it’s below that low level just to get
03:47
you by it’d be better to put some oil in
03:49
then oil and run it low because if you
03:53
run your engine without oil it could
03:56
seize up on you and that’s thousands of
03:59
dollars so I would rather run some sort
04:02
of oil in there temporarily until you
04:04
can get to an oil change and have them
04:05
have been filled it up properly
04:07
alright thank you
