Do you ever feel like there’s someone out there who was perfect for you — someone you loved deeply, someone who made your heart race and your soul feel at home — but life, timing, or circumstance tore you apart? Maybe they moved away.
Perhaps you were too young. Maybe one of you wasn’t ready. And so, you tell yourself the same comforting lie: It was the right person, just the wrong time.
But what if that’s not true?
What if the idea of “right person, wrong time” is just a way to soften the blow of reality — that if they were truly the right person, time wouldn’t have been an issue at all?
The Comfort of the Wrong Time Excuse
It’s easier to blame timing than to admit the harder truth: that love isn’t always enough. That sometimes, two people can care deeply for each other and still not be right for one another.
That sometimes, the person we thought was the one was just a lesson, not a lifetime.
Think about it — if someone truly is your person, wouldn’t they fight for you? Wouldn’t they choose you, no matter the obstacles? Wouldn’t they stay, even when things got hard?
The truth is, timing is just another word for priority. If someone wants to be with you, they’ll make it happen. If they don’t, they’ll make excuses.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Take Angel, who spent three and a half years with someone who cheated on her. She says she hasn’t been able to love again since, convinced that if things had been different — if the timing had been better — maybe it would have worked.
But here’s the painful reality: if he was the right person, he wouldn’t have cheated. He wouldn’t have lost interest. He wouldn’t have let her go.
Or consider Mike, who still mourns a middle-school breakup, believing that if only his ex’s new girlfriend hadn’t interfered, they could have stayed best friends.
But the truth? If they were meant to stay in each other’s lives, nothing could have pulled them apart.
We cling to the idea of “wrong time” because it’s less painful than admitting that maybe, just maybe, the person we loved wasn’t the right fit for us at all.
The Myth of Perfect Timing
Here’s the thing: there is no perfect time. Life is messy. People grow, change, and make mistakes.
Love isn’t about finding someone who fits neatly into your life at the exact moment you’re ready — it’s about finding someone willing to grow with you, even when the timing is inconvenient.
A 17-year-old named Rob said it best: “If you find the right person, anything you were ever scared of or uncomfortable with just disappears over time with them.” And she’s right.
The right person doesn’t make you question their love. They don’t leave you wondering if you were just a victim of bad timing. They stay. They choose you. Again and again.
The Hard Truth
The “right person, wrong time” narrative is a coping mechanism. It’s a way to hold onto hope that someday, somehow, the stars will align and that person will come back into your life, ready to love you the way you deserve.
But the real question is: Why would you want someone who walked away when things got hard? Why would you wait for someone who didn’t fight for you?
The right person doesn’t need perfect timing — they just need to be the right person. And if they were, they wouldn’t have left.
Moving Forward
So what do you do when you realize that “wrong time” was just an excuse? You heal. You grow. And most importantly, you stop romanticizing a love that wasn’t strong enough to withstand life’s challenges.
Because the right person won’t make you question if you were meant to be. They won’t leave you wondering if things could have worked under different circumstances.
They’ll just love you — fully, completely, and without hesitation.
And when you find that kind of love, you’ll realize: timing was never the issue.
It was always about the person.
And the right one?
They won’t need perfect timing.
They’ll just need you.
