For a few weeks, I was noticing something strange.
I was sleeping more than usual.
I stopped replying to messages quickly.
I laughed less.
Even on weekends, I did not feel excited about anything.
At first, I blamed work. Then I blamed my phone. Then I thought maybe I just needed a vacation.
But none of those things were the real reason.
One day, I realized something that changed the way I looked at my life.
I was not tired of life.
I was tired of being close to someone who made everything feel heavier.
The weight you cannot see
Some people do not shout.
They do not fight.
They do not insult you.
But somehow, after spending time with them, you feel exhausted.
You cannot explain why.
You just feel lighter when they leave.
That feeling is trying to tell you something.
A friend once invited me for coffee. I was happy to meet him. But for one hour, he complained about everything.
His job. His family. The weather. Politics. Money. His neighbors. Nothing was ever good. When I came back home, I felt tired.
Not because I walked too much. Not because I worked too much.I was tired because I had carried someone else’s negativity for an hour.
That day, I understood something.
Energy is real.
Some people give it. Some people take it.
You slowly become a different person
The scary part is that it happens slowly.
You start saying “I’m fine” when you are not. You stop sharing your ideas because they always criticize them. You stop making jokes because they never laugh.
You stop dreaming because they tell you it will never work. Little by little, you become quieter.
Not because you changed. Because you are protecting yourself.
The guilt
The hardest part is the guilt.
You want some space. But then you feel selfish. You think, “They have been through a lot.”
“They need me.”
“Maybe I am overreacting.”
So you stay.
Even when your mind is asking for peace. I have learned that wanting peace does not make you a bad person.
It makes you a human being.
Imagine you buy a healthy little plant. You water it every day. You give it sunlight. But you keep it in a room full of smoke.
After a few weeks, the leaves start turning yellow.
You do not blame the plant. You know the environment is hurting it.
People are the same.
Sometimes you are not broken. You are simply spending too much time in an unhealthy environment.
Good people can still drain you
This is important.
Not every person who drains you is a bad person.
Some people are carrying so much pain that they unknowingly pass it to everyone around them.
You can love them. You can care about them. But you do not have to carry their emotional weight every single day.
Helping someone should not mean losing yourself.
A quiet afternoon
One Sunday, I stayed home.
No phone calls. No unnecessary conversations. Just a cup of tea, a book, and some music.
For the first time in weeks, I felt peaceful. Nothing amazing happened. But I smiled.
That small smile reminded me of something. Peace is not boring. Peace is healing.
Protect your energy
We protect our money. We protect our phones. We protect our homes.
But many of us never protect our energy.
We let anyone enter our lives. We answer every call. We attend every gathering. We listen to every complaint.
Then we wonder why we feel empty. Our energy deserves protection too.
Sometimes distance is the answer
Not every problem needs a fight.
Not every relationship needs an explanation.
Sometimes a little distance gives you the clarity you could never find while staying close. You do not need to hate someone.
You simply need enough space to hear your own thoughts again.
The lesson I learned
These days, I pay attention to one simple question.
“How do I feel after spending time with this person?”
If I feel inspired, peaceful, and happy, I know that relationship is healthy. If I feel anxious, guilty, and emotionally tired every single time, I know something needs to change.
Life is already hard.
The people closest to us should not make it harder. Sometimes the greatest act of self-care is not buying something new. It is choosing who gets access to your time, your mind, and your peace.
Because one day you may realize what I did. You were never tired of life. You were simply carrying a weight that was never yours to carry.
